Historians appear to have only squishy ground upon which to stand, and hence little basis for claiming any consensus at all on what the past might tell us with respect to the present and future.   Except when you ask the question: compared to what? No other mode of inquiry comes any closer to producing such a consensus, and most fall far short of it. The very fact that orthodoxies so dominate the realms of religion and culture suggests the absence of agreement from below, and hence the need to impose it from above. People adapt to technology and environment in so many different ways as to defy generalization. Traditions manifest themselves so variously across such diverse institutions and cultures that they provide hardly any consistency on what the past should signify.  The historical method, in this sense, beats all the others.     John Lewis Gaddis (2002), The Landscape of History, Oxford University Press.

At this year's Commencement, F&M recognized Arthur and Katherine Shadek Professor of the Humanities and Religious Studies Professor John Modern with the Bradley R. Dewey Award for Scholarship. Modern is arguably the top scholar of American religious history today, and his 2011 work “Secularism in Antebellum America” is perhaps the most widely debated and discussed book in the field. His more recent and award-winning 2021 book, “Neuromatic, Or, a Particular History of Religion and the Brain,” examines the intimate entanglement of religion, secularism, and modern science, and is already destined to become a classic. As the citation for this award states: "Modern is not only an exceptional scholar; he is also a maker of exceptional scholars." #fandmproud

Many classical and Christian school leaders tend to employ a near-exclusive emphasis on vision-casting, often as an excuse to indulge their own ambivalence toward planning, their disregard for disciplined operations, or their reluctance around intentional colleague engagement. I have known men and women who, though unflinchingly committed to the ideals of classical and/or Christian education, were severely limited in advancing it as a cause. They could defend the classical ideal eloquently. But they struggled to execute toward it in a consistent and sustainable way. Their great strength—a passion for our great spiritual and intellectual tradition—loomed so large that it led them to ignore the need to implement the requisite supporting structures. Whatever you may think about Jobs, he is spot on in highlighting that craftsmanship is as important as a great idea. How we organize and operate our schools matters. We desperately need more craftsmanship in the classical and Christian ed movement. #classical #christian
