It is with great excitement and pride that we announce Prof Tanya van Wyk has been appointed as the new HOD for our Department of Systematic and Historical Theology. The first woman to take on this role, and one of the youngest departmental heads in the history of our Faculty, Prof van Wyk will now get to use her years of academic experience, vast theological training and natural leadership talent to pioneer fresh prospects for our students in these important fields of inquiry. #womeninleadership #newhopeforthefuture

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of our beloved colleague and friend, Prof Andries van Aarde, passing away in recent days. His impact on the practice of publishing and in the field of Theology is immeasurable, as was the value we placed in his professional companionship. The Faculty of Theology and Religion at UP welcomes Professor Chris De Wet! Prof. De Wet is in the department of New Testament and Related Literature. Before becoming a professor at the University of Pretoria, he was a professor at UNISA for 17 years, in the department of New Testament and Early Christian Studies. He is an established scholar in early Christian studies, specializing in topics such as slavery in the New Testament and early church, the works of John Chrysostom, gender and sexuality, healthcare, and disability in early Christianity, and monasticism and asceticism in Late Antiquity. His research delves into ancient Christian perspectives on social issues, examining how figures like Chrysostom and early Christian texts shaped ethical thought and identity. He has published several works and he is also the executive editor of the Journal of Early Christian History and is currently working on a new book exploring Christian historical responses to the Justinianic plague, the first major bubonic plague pandemic in 542 CE.
