Rory Lawson and Don Ledingham had a great day at Newhallestate with the leadership team at The NWH Group - one of the UK's leading recycling and waste management businesses with a mission to change their industry for the benefit of the planet. In the course of a full day the team focused in on building a personal and collective leadership vocabulary based on the Ceannas Lenses and the Building Blocks of Culture. It was great to hear that this proved to be productive the following day when the team focused in on their own exciting plans for the business aimed at achieving a £70 million turnover within the next two years. In a fascinating discussion about Leadership and Management, Dougie Neil, General Manager for operations, suggested that Management equated to 'Push' and Leadership to 'Pull". In his typical fashion Don when encountering great ideas wanted to claim it for himself and Ceannas, but henceforth it will be known as the 'Dougie Neil Principle'. The reason it speaks to us is that Management processes, systems and behaviours work to underpin an organisation's performance, whereas, Leadership enables, draws the best out of people, and takes people on a journey. As with any simplistic statement there are holes in it but as a basic 'rule of thumb', or heuristic, we think it really works.
