Hitachi Rail has delivered Greece’s first-ever driverless metro, inaugurating the first phase of Thessaloniki’s new metro line. The project includes Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) digital signaling and a fleet of 33 state-of-the-art metro trains. The initial phase spans 9.6 kilometers and features 13 stations. It is projected to reduce 56,000 cars from roads daily and cut 77,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainability and efficient urban mobility. The trains, manufactured at Hitachi Rail’s Reggio Calabria plant in Italy, consist of four-car configurations with a capacity of 450 passengers per train. Future expansions will add five additional stations covering an extra 4.8 kilometers, further connecting the city center to the airport. CBTC technology enables precise train control, enhancing service capacity and efficiency. This milestone highlights Hitachi Rail’s product portfolio, which combines metro driverless solutions, digital signaling, and advanced rolling stock tailored to modern urban needs. It builds on the company’s expertise from similar projects in Milan, Taipei, Lima, and Copenhagen. #HitachiRail #DriverlessMetro #SmartMobility #UrbanSustainability #Product #Portfolio #PublicTransport UITP #CBTC https://lnkd.in/ds6HGJJT

Alstom has secured a contract to supply 15 additional automated #metro #trains to the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL). The order, valued at approximately 210 million EUR, brings the total number of new-generation trains ordered for the Lille metro network to 42. The new 52-metre-long trainsets will operate on Line 1 of the Lille metro and feature Alstom’s Urbalis Fluence signalling system. This advanced system, which utilises direct train-to-train communication and embeds the system’s intelligence on board, is expected to enhance operational efficiency and network performance. The additional trains will replace the ageing VAL-208 trainsets, which have served the network since its launch. Scheduled for deployment from 2028, this order forms part of a broader modernisation initiative aimed at improving the metro’s #infrastructure, rolling stock, and automated #train control systems across Lines 1 and 2. Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France said: “Alstom is delighted with this new order from the Métropole Européenne de Lille for this new-generation equipment. These new, modern and comfortable metros represent a considerable asset for improving the network and the passenger experience.” The new metros, based on Alstom’s rubber-tyred metro solutions, offer several enhancements: * Increased Capacity: Each train can carry up to 545 passengers. The “boa” design, with wide gangways and open spaces between cars, allows for seamless movement throughout the train. * Improved Accessibility: Dedicated areas for passengers with reduced #mobility, alongside multimedia to improve the travel experience. * Enhanced Safety: An integrated video surveillance system will ensure passenger security onboard and at platforms. * Energy Efficiency: High-performance #traction equipment will reduce energy consumption. The trains will be designed and assembled in #France. With their delivery, Line 1 will transition to an entirely new-generation fleet, improving comfort, accessibility, and environmental performance. Equipped with the Urbalis Fluence autopilot system, the new trains will also increase the frequency of services. During peak hours, intervals between trains will be reduced to as little as 66 seconds. https://lnkd.in/eCuyUBz3
