World Town Planning Day, also known as World Urbanism Day, is an annual event celebrated on November 8th. It was founded in 1949 by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera to raise awareness about the importance of urban planning and its impact on our lives. This day highlights the role of planners in creating sustainable, equitable, and resilient cities. It's a time to celebrate the achievements of urban planning and to discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. However, the theme for the 2024 is "Youth Leading Climate and Local Action for Cities." This theme emphasizes the important role of young people in addressing urban climate challenges and promoting sustainable urban development.

Always good to see the The Academy of Urbanism (AoU)'s quarterly journal published. This time reflecting on 25 years from the #Urban #Task #Force's seminal report 'Towards an Urban Renaissance'. And with a new 'New Towns' Task Force in play, it's super useful to hear from people involved at the time who consider their experience, the reports efficacy, and what if anything would change should our young leaders be asked a similar question. Save The Date! The Australasian Cities Research Network (ACRN) is delighted to announce the State of Australasian Cities (SOAC) Conference will be held in Brisbane from 9-12 December 2025, preceded by PhD/ECR Symposium being held from 7-9 December. Visit www.soac2025.com and sign up to the enewsletter to be kept informed. SOAC 2025 will promote, foster, champion, and disseminate research relevant to Australasian cities and regions. It will bring together areas such as urban planning, how design and policy address current challenges and global trends in urbanism with a focus on legacy, long-term sustainability, and innovation. The interplay between global dynamics and local challenges presents a critical juncture for Australasian cities and regional centres. Phenomena such as climate change, pandemics, conflict, economic downturns, and political volatility are not merely external factors but are directly augmenting the complexity of local issues. These include environmental sustainability, urban sprawl and transportation, housing affordability and homelessness, population growth and demographic shifts, the preservation and integration of indigenous communities and knowledge, economic diversification and employment, and addressing the digital divide and connectivity. These challenges necessitate a departure from reactive policies towards a more proactive and integrated approach to urban and regional planning. #SOAC2025 #Brisbane

Breaking Barriers to Accelerate Nature-Inclusive Urban Development: Best Practices 🌱 🌆 🌲📈🌳 💚 This StoryMap is intended as an inspirational guide to accelerate nature-inclusive urban development. This approach combines biodiversity goals with urban development, resulting in nature-based solutions such as blue/green roofs, smart water management and vertical ecosystems, to create climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive cities. Seven barriers have been identified limiting the acceleration of the nature-based approach, including aspects, such as lack of financing, competition for urban space, limited collaboration and insufficient knowledge. To make a change, we need to think of possibilities, instead of only focusing on the barriers. In this StoryMap, many inspiring practical examples are demonstrated. For example, the Trudo Vertical Forest in Eindhoven, combines social housing with a green iconic appearance. Projects such as GreenQuays in Breda show how vertical ecosystems can be integrated even in urban areas without space for natural banks.
