TEMPORARY DISABILITY RETIREMENT LIST If you meet the qualifications for permanent disability retirement but have at least one medical condition that is considered not stable for rating purposes, you will be placed on the Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL). The Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) makes this determination when a condition's severity is expected to change over time, meaning it may improve or worsen. Placement on the TDRL provides time for additional medical observation and treatment, during which the condition's status will be periodically reviewed to assess whether a more accurate and stable disability rating can be established. In particular, active-duty Soldiers experiencing behavioral health conditions linked to traumatic events—such as combat-related PTSD, depression, or anxiety—are almost always assigned to the TDRL. This approach allows for a period of careful monitoring and ongoing treatment before a final determination is made regarding the Soldier's fitness for continued service or eligibility for permanent disability retirement. The TDRL serves as a transitional phase aimed at ensuring that the final disability rating accurately reflects the long-term impact of the condition on the Soldier's overall health and ability to function. The Major Richard Star Act is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill. The bill aims to ensure that all service members who medically retire have access to both military retirement pay and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs disability benefits. Currently, veterans with fewer than 20 years of service and a disability rating of less than 50% have their retirement pay reduced by a dollar for every dollar of disability pay they receive. This leaves around 50,000 retirees ineligible for concurrent benefits. The Major Richard Star Act seeks to remove these restrictions and allow all retirees with combat-related disabilities to receive their full retirement and disability benefits. Broad bipartisan support for the bill has been shown, with over 320 co-sponsors in the House and more than 70 in the Senate. Despite concerns about the cost, supporters argue that the country owes these benefits to its veterans. Lawmakers and veterans service organizations are determined to keep fighting until the bill becomes law. #DisabledVeterans #MajorRichardStarAct #VeteransBenefits #MilitaryRetirement #SupportOurVeterans

A recent study, a collaboration between Voya Financial and Easterseals, a disability and community services provider, has revealed that 51% of disabled veterans are confident in their ability to cover everyday expenses. The study also proposes a range of benefits that could significantly improve the financial confidence of veterans with disabilities: 🌟 Help to maximize dollars spent across VA benefits and employer benefits, such as retirement plans, health savings accounts (HSAs), healthcare insurance, and other voluntary benefits; 🌟 A workplace emergency savings fund to put money aside through payroll deduction; 🌟 Support and resources to help make the transition from military service to civilian jobs; 🌟 Help to estimate income needs in retirement, including future health care costs, as well as personalized advice services and financial planning for retirement; 🌟 Expanding health insurance coverage for mental illness. This is mainly for the guys, but it can help anyone. Routinely, I see male clients, with families-not just single guys, who don't "choose" the long-term disability coverage at work when it's optional. They say to me, "I don't plan on being disabled." First of all, shame on all you companies that don't offer some sort of disability coverage at all. I am a small business owner myself. The least you can do is offer this one thing. Do you really want to be the company on the news who fired Jimmy because he got cancer and couldn't work anymore....and also couldn't pay his bills because he didn't have disability coverage? Secondarily, make it an opt-out version after they talk to an intelligent supervisor....if you aren't going to pay for it. Group disability is not that expensive, and there's very little excuse for not paying. Thank you for coming to my rant. We teach people to retire well... the first time.
