The National Coordinating Committee – Swimming for Disabled People (NCC-SDP) has introduced a small grants fund aimed at increasing the involvement of disabled individuals in swimming activities. Grants of up to £500 are available to support innovative projects that provide life-changing support, impact, and insight. These grants are ideal for projects or clubs making a significant difference to a smaller group of individuals, rather than large-scale, one-off events. The focus is on fostering deeper inclusion and access to water, from hydrotherapy sessions to competitive para-swimming opportunities. While most grants will be up to £500, exceptionally innovative proposals may be considered for larger amounts. Play and challenge... Children often want to create challenge and uncertainty in their play. Through risky, challenging play, children test themselves and find out their own limits. They learn how to deal with risk through play and can use these same skills later in life. Parents should encourage their children from birth to extend themselves. Teach them basic skills including: - Riding a bicycle - Swimming - Road safety Explain that it’s important to learn from mistakes, to try again and to believe in themselves. Help them understand their limits and their boundaries. Allow them to have fun in their play! How are you challenging your kids through play? The stark reality for primary schools, sending pupils Swimming in Birmingham next year. These models are based on a 3-form entry school! Model one - Weekly swimming lesson. Overall Summary: Total cost for both Year 4 and Year 5 (per term block) = £1045 + £2200 x 6 = £19,470 Total learning time per pupil = 5.5 hours Model two - two lessons per week. Overall Summary: Total cost for both Year 4 and Year 5 (per half term block) = £1140 + £2400 x 6 = £21,240 Total learning time per pupil = 6 hours Model three - intensive swimming lessons. Overall Summary: Total cost for both Year 4 and Year 5 (per two-week block) = £950 + £2000 x 6 = £17,700 Total learning time per pupil = 5 hours To grant pupils access to 12 hours of learning time during their lifespan at school, this will currently cost £21,240 for each year group! And yet, 12 hours of learning is still not enough time to reach national curriculum requirements for our current school communities! My reason for his posts is just to raise awareness of the current landscape we face trying to make Swimming more accessible for all.

Agree with the sentiment of how important school swimming is for young people and their communities, however the call to make schools more accountable via Ofsted and for the DfE to publish more data is highly problematic. 1) We know that Ofsted are in the midst of reviewing their processes with some big changes already in place and the accountability aspect is and always has been a key area of concern. It is not a proxy for development and has led to ‘ticking boxes’ 🤷🏾♂️ How does the aquatics sector envision this helping? 🤔🤔 2) We have already have data published via the Active Lives Survey and schools are mandated to submit data via the new online report form provided by the Youth Sport Trust and Association for Physical Education. What will the DfE reporting do differently and how will more data help? 🫤🫤 3) Lastly and more importantly, for obvious reasons the vast majority of schools outsource their swimming provision. Surely it is extremely problematic to increase school accountability for a curriculum they do not have the means to deliver themselves. 🤷🏾♂️ How much accountability is placed at the feet of the providers? Is this the same path the The Swimming Alliance are going with regards to their response to the curriculum review? I really hope not 😢 Disclaimer: I want school swimming to be amazing for all so my questions and critiques stem solely from that viewpoint. I have no interest in pointing fingers so hopefully this is received in the right spirit 🙌🏾

Calling all Swimming Pool Operators, we need your help - this will only take 2 minutes. Drowning is one of the leading causes of child deaths, 125 child drowning deaths have occurred in England in the last four years…125 too many!!!! The Department for Education is reviewing the national curriculum. Swimming and Water Safety is currently within key stages 1 and 2. While it is very basic, at least children should be taught to swim and how to stay safe if they get into difficulty. We need it to remain on the curriculum, so I am asking you to click the link below, use the template letter, amend it if you like and send it by e-mail to curriculum-assessment.review@education.gov.uk https://lnkd.in/dgDsfAye
