Thinking about the #mineralsssecuritypartnership (MSP) this morning, and the question of how to measure its effectiveness, I'm struck by the idea that much of the legislative, financial and strategic mobilisation of Western mineral coalition has yet to get off the ground. Its really too soon to tell.
Yet, the #MSP is the chief geo-strategic network of global relationships designed to secure and diversify critical mineral supply chains for its members. So what are its challenges so far? Are there frictions between members? And where do you balance rhetoric with reality? How effective are Memorandums of Understandings (MoU), such as between Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and the DRC state-owned Gecamines S.A.? Or other bilateral MoUs between member states, such as the UK?
It's too early to tell how effective these partnerships will be. Three years ago, there was no #MSP, not many critical mineral strategies (except in US and Aus), and China controlled the majority of these critical minerals supply chains. It still does. 👀
Time will tell whether, say, the Australian-based EcoGraf Limited (ASX:EGR, FSE:FMK, OTCQB:ECGFF) graphite project will prove effective, or the Chvaletice manganese project with the Canadian Euro Manganese Inc., Queensland Pacific Metals nickel processing project in Northern Australia for General Motors and LG Energy Solution and POSCO (*bearing in mind the slump in nickel right now); or the HyProMag Ltd rare earth magnet recycling project that uses Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) technology, working with Mkango Resources Ltd. and the University of Birmingham.
Certainly the game is changing, but has it changed much yet? As the #MSP matures, watch out for inevitable ESG bumps in the road, realignments in market share and ultimately a drop in consumer prices..
