I am pleased to announce that our paper “FLrce: Resource-Efficient Federated Learning with Early-Stopping Strategy”has been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. Kudos to my PhD student Ziru Niu! Within this paper, we proposed FLrce, an efficient federated learning framework for accelerating the training process and reducing resource consumption by selecting significant clients (edge devices) and employing an early stopping mechanism. FLrce improves computation and communication efficiency by over 40% compared to state-of-the-art federated learning frameworks. QCi Lesson of the Week: Combinatorial Optimization Problems! Dive into this week’s lesson from QCi’s learning module on the analog quantum advantage and explore the challenging problems which QCi’s entropy quantum computing devices aim to solve – known as combinatorial optimization problems. In this lesson, QCi takes an in-depth look at this class of optimization problems, which are difficult because they have many potential solutions but no practical way to find the best one efficiently, leading to a combinatorial explosion of possible solutions. The traveling salesperson problem exemplifies this difficulty, as the number of possible routes grows factorially with the number of cities, making it infeasible to solve by enumeration for large instances. While exact solutions are impractical for large problems, approximate algorithms and quantum computing devices offer promising alternatives by finding good enough solutions in a reasonable time.
