Are you planning a tree planting project? 🌳 According to the Somerset Tree Strategy 2023, Somerset's tree cover by area is below the national average. The loss of our trees and woodlands has, in some places, been devastating for dependent species, or wildlife which travels through wildlife corridors created by areas of woodland. At a landscape level, woodland size, diversity, and connectivity need to increase. Planting trees can be a relatively easy, community-focused and extremely rewarding way of helping local wildlife, but the success of planting will depend on choosing the right tree for the right place. ✅ For #NationalTreeWeek, find out how to choose the right tree for the right place with our handy guide: https://lnkd.in/ekeKAcEy #RightTreeRightPlace #Trees #Woodland #NatureRecovery #Landscape #Conservation

Dive into the world of oyster restoration with the Wilder Humber team! 🌊 Our dedicated crew takes you behind the scenes at Spurn Point, where we’re nurturing thousands of native oysters in our trestle nursery. 🦪 This ambitious project is working to reintroduce half a million Ostrea edulis to the Humber estuary over the next 5 years! But it’s not just about oysters—it’s about restoring entire ecosystems! 🌿🐟 Oysters filter water, create habitats for marine life, and help build coastal resilience. Watch our latest video to see how these tiny heroes are making a BIG impact! #WilderHumber is delivered by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Ørsted. 🌊 #OysterRestoration #SaveOurSeas #HumberEstuary #MarineConservation

Why you should leave the leaves! 🍂 Did you know #rewilding isn’t just a spring activity? This fall, let nature take its course by skipping the rake! Leaving leaves in your yard helps enrich the soil, shelters pollinators, and supports wildlife all winter long. 🍁🐞 Just like in the forest, decomposing leaves in our backyards create a mini-ecosystem that boosts #biodiversity and prepares the soil for a thriving spring. Embrace year-round rewilding and let the leaves work their magic! Read more on our blog 👇 #RewildYourBackyard #LeaveTheLeaves #ProjectForest

A BIT MORE BACKGROUND EXCERPT: The relative success of Nevada’s Pyramid Lake Paiute (Cui-ui Ticutta) at defending their land against tourists, miners and farmers is unusual, but not unique. Taos (New Mexico) Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, Northwestern Band of Shoshone of northern Utah, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Blackfeet Nation of northwestern Montana and other tribes also have recognized the downside of tourism and commercial development: overloaded infrastructure, damage to nature and threats to their culture and heritage. Each tribe, given their unique circumstances, found the wherewithal to fend off a bit of the onslaught by limiting or even banning tourism and related commercial activities, regulating the supply of accommodations, preventing infrastructure development and outright purchase of sacred land. The growing political clout nationally of Native Americans reclaiming their ancestral land and preservation of their culture and spirituality — in many ways their identities — holds important lessons in the effort to mitigate on-going damage to the Cedar Mesa (aka Bears Ears) region of southeastern Utah. https://lnkd.in/g_PqKeV9
The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition staff had an enriching week in Montana, delving into other comanagement arrangements, like the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ assumption of the Bison Range from USFWS. We learned about the Tribes’ adept management of various wildlife species, like Grizzlies, elk, mountain lion, migratory birds, and more. Additionally, we spent time in Glacier National Park, where we saw a live Grizzly mama gorging on fish, hiked, and enjoyed spectacular views like this one from Going to the Sun Road. Many of us were wearing our Coalition t-shirts and even the interns got really good at explaining our work to curious members of the public who wanted to know more about who we were and what we do. It was a special week with a very special crew, including Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson and Michael Garlid, among others! #indigenousconservation #publiclands #landback #indigenousstewardship

🌲 The reintroduction of #wolf into Yellowstone National Park has been incredibly successful. The wolf is a keystone species, which means that the plants and animals within the broader ecosystem depend on the wolf for survival. The reintroduction has decreased elk numbers, which has allowed the over-grazed local vegetation to recover and thrive. ♻️ Think someone could learn from this? Repost. #Rewilding #Sustainability #GreenTransition #SustainabilityEducation

Transport for NSW has an obligation to assess the impact of our activities on the environment including any significant impact on threatened species and their habitat. Many of us embrace the spooky season with decorations and costumes. One creature that often finds its way into Halloween lore is the bat. In NSW, microbats face real dangers due to human activities, including construction and maintenance work on Transport structures like bridges, culverts and wharves. Earlier in the year, when inspecting the McLeans Bridge for a scour repair, the project team found a large colony of more than 150 microbats, including at least 3 threatened species, roosting in the concrete bridge cavities. 🦇🦇🦇 To ensure that the microbats were not spooked by the potentially disruptive works on the bridge, the Environment and Sustainability team worked with ecologists to develop a microbat management plan for the project. Guided by Transport’s Microbat management guidelines, the committed project team avoided construction during the bats’ torpor— a deep rest period essential for conserving energy — as well as during their breeding seasons. By carefully timing our works and monitoring the area, we’re committed to minimising disruptions and safeguarding these fascinating creatures. And we’re happy to announce that after all the works, the microbats are still happily roosting under the bridge. 🌉🦇 #Sustainability #Environment #TransportForNSW
