It was a rare pleasure to speak to a group of students at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) yesterday on the subject of building (and maintaining) a career in international law, organised under the auspices of the Italian branch of the International Law Association. 📚 Evolution in My Legal Journey 🎓 I am thrilled to share that alongside my final year pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Law, I have now become a member of the French Association for the Study of Competition (AFEC). This organization is dedicated to studying and discussing competition laws and their impact on industries and economies. Joining AFEC is a step aimed at deepening my understanding and expertise in competition law, a field I am deeply enthusiastic about. As a member, I have the unique opportunity to collaborate and learn directly from specialized attorneys in competition law. This immersion not only complements my academic efforts but also enhances my practical understanding of how competition regulations influence industries and ensure market fairness. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hearing from, meeting, and debating with one of my academic heroes. I have referenced Martti Koskenniemi in almost every single dissertation and article I have ever written, and he has truly helped shape my perception of international law. However, this is not to say that I agree with everything he saidi. I was really dissatisfied with his answer to my question about political interpretation of IHL, and when he drew the famous duck/rabbit image to explain the relationship between law and politics, I remembered that when this question is asked, the answer often naturally refers to the UNSC and other politico-legal institutions, rather than the relationship that individual governments have with international law or how they interpret their own international legal obligations. Debating with your academic idol is the thing of dreams for legal nerds, and there's nothing more motivating than attempting to counter his argument with my own thesis. New PhD motivation? For it to be so outrageous that Koskenniemi will debate it with me again. #internationallaw #criticallegaltheory #KCL #koskenniemi #lawstudent
