New and improved oxidation processes are highly sought after within academia and industry. Of specific interest is the direct oxidation of benzylic positions as this constitutes a key approach to manufacturing carbonyl-based fine chemicals. In our most recently paper, published in OPR&D, a continuous flow approach for the aerobic photo-oxidation of benzylic substrates to ketone and aldehyde products is presented. This approach offers several improvements over alternative oxidation methods due to the combined use of air as an oxidant and SAS (sodium anthraquinone-2 sulfonate) as a water-soluble photocatalyst. The use of greener and safer conditions together with process intensification principles renders this flow approach attractive for further industrial applications. Melt Flow Index (MFI) measurements for biopolymers are highly dependent on drying conditions, varying by 5-10%. This application note shows how those variances shrink to less than 0.5% using Intrinsic Viscosity (IV). Keep using your melt flow indexer; MFI is absolutely critical to processability. But MFI does NOT tell you whether your polymer will work in the application. Was the resin subjected to temperature and humidity extremes in transport? Are you using the right grade? Is the proper amount of filler material added? IV will let you know rapidly whether your polymer is fit for use. Using a fully automated sample preparation and analysis routine, IV values are measured using less than one minute of operator time per sample, from the start of sample preparation to the end of data analysis. How much does each scrapped production run cost you in lost profits and back-and-forth with your resin supplier pointing fingers? As a manufacturer, how much time and resources are spent on technical support, confirming for customers your product does in fact meet the specification sheet data? Analysing the #environmental impacts associated with synthesising #polyurethane (PUR) #aerogels!   Researchers involved in the #BIOMAT Project have recently unveiled their latest findings in a groundbreaking #article published in the Resources journal. This work delves into the environmental impacts of #synthesising polyurethane (PUR) aerogels, exploring how different #solvents and #solids contents affect #production and #sustainability!   The team examined nine experimental scenarios through a meticulous Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA), revealing that a formulation with 100% ethyl acetate (EtOAc) boasts the lowest environmental impacts. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 • Odor: the main source is from the small molecules produced by the hydrolysis of mercaptan esters. Mercaptans with low purity will also have residual odor-causing small molecules. • Poor storage stability: this originates from the heat-initiated addition reaction with acrylates.
