🌟 Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: A Time to Reflect and Act 🌟 September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the brave children and families affected by cancer. Every year, thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer, and while significant progress has been made, there's still much more to be done. Early detection and precise diagnosis are crucial in improving outcomes, and we are proud to be at the forefront of innovations that make a difference. This month, we stand in solidarity with the children, families, and healthcare professionals battling this disease. We also honor the researchers and medical teams whose dedication and expertise are bringing us closer to a world where childhood cancer is no longer a threat. Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the strength of these young warriors and consider how we can contribute to this important cause. Whether it's through raising awareness, supporting research, or simply sharing a message of hope, every action counts. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #EDHNuclear #NuclearMedicine #HealthcareInnovation #HopeForACure

Today President Biden proclaimed April 2024 as National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month to "honor the enormous courage and strength of the millions of Americans facing the disease today and of the many millions of survivors, whose resilience inspires us all." We've made enormous progress in the fight against cancer, but there's still work to be done. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, and this year we expect to see more than 2 million new cases of cancer diagnosed across the country. To achieve the #CancerMoonshot and cut the cancer death rate by at least 50% in the next 25 years, we must prioritize cancer research, early detection, and prevention—The White House has a meaningful opportunity to make progress in the latter by finalizing the FDA's proposed rules to eliminate the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars immediately. Together with the American Cancer Society, we look forward to continuing to work with the Biden Administration to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. #NationalCancerPreventionAndEarlyDetectionMonth #CancerPrevention #EarlyDetection #ProhibitMenthol #CancerAdvocacy https://lnkd.in/e8RDV3Gr

Cutting the cancer death rate in half over 25 years is hardly a goal. Regulatory hurdles and funding continue to be obstacles. People are dying in the meantime. President Biden holds the highest office in the country, lost a son to glioblastoma, and has done next to nothing to further treatment for brain cancer. Brain cancer needs more funding and resource allocation. Period. The FDA needs to quit sitting on their hands and move forward when drugs are efficacious. ONC201 for Diffuse Midline Glioma has demonstrated such, yet the FDA issued a Phase 3 double-blind trial. The 50% not receiving the drug have no other option than ONC201 for survival. Not providing those people with a chance when a chance exists is complete indecency. I am living a brain cancer journey through the footsteps of my brave husband, Bryan, and I can assure you that #bidencancermoonshot/“Cancer Cabinet” has done nothing to make the trek less hellish. Our time is wasted on phone calls to insurance because they’re largely inept, harassing phone calls from disability as one navigates a clinical trial to see if one is “still disabled” and to request more paperwork from the Neuro-oncologist (because filling out waste of time paperwork is a great use of time for Neuro-onc offices that have very ill patients to care for), and oncology navigation as suggested from the “Cancer Cabinet”…no. When you learn that a clinical trial is your next step, as was the case for my husband, you are thrown to the breeze and sprint to chart a path. You are on your own. We can collectively do better in this country, and cancer cares very little about one’s political affiliation.
As part of President Biden’s Unity Agenda and following his #SOTU address, the Biden Cancer Moonshot announced key new actions that deliver urgent progress to Americans. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/e6EXZCbv

Why is guaranteeing diversity and inclusion essential in the World Cancer theme “United by Unique”? Guaranteeing diversity and inclusion is essential in the theme “United by Unique” for World Cancer Day 2025-2027 because it acknowledges that each person’s cancer experience is shaped by their unique background, culture, and needs. Placing people at the center of care requires understanding and addressing disparities in access to healthcare, treatment outcomes, and the impact of social determinants. Inclusion ensures that every voice and story is heard, fostering a more equitable, empathetic, and patient-centered approach to cancer care, where no individual is overlooked or marginalized. Let’s us ask ourselves, and be truthful in our responses, if we ensure that every voice and story is heard, fostering a more empathetic, and patient-centered approach to cancer care, where NO INDIVIDUAL is overlooked or marginalized.

Kaiser Permanente proudly participates in the #NationalCancerPlan, created as part of the Cancer Moonshot, which aims to reduce cancer deaths by half by 2047 and to improve the experience of people who are touched by cancer. In support of this work, Kaiser Permanente developed a national Cancer Support Line to help our patients and their caregivers address issues and find resources throughout their cancer journey. From the moment cancer is suspected, many patients and caregivers feel overwhelmed and do not know where to seek help for non-medical questions. Social risks, including financial instability, housing and food insecurity can lead to poor cancer outcomes. To help address these gaps, we used principles of human-centered design to co-create the Cancer Support Line with our patient partners. The line connects our members and their caregivers with a single point of contact, known as a cancer support specialist. This highly trained specialist can guide patients and caregivers to the nonmedical resources, social health support, and information they need throughout their cancer journey. These resources include help with health plan benefits and financial assistance, connecting patients with emotional support resources such as no-cost self-care apps and help with community resources such as securing access to healthy food or finding transportation to appointments. Earlier this year, we launched a pilot and are now rapidly expanding the line nationally. Our members report very high levels of satisfaction with this important resource. You can read more about the pilot results in the link below, which were published at the 2024 ASCO Quality Care Symposium. We didn’t do this alone. Kaiser Permanente would like to thank our colleagues at the National Cancer Information Center at the American Cancer Society for their mentorship and support in the planning of the Line. Our work was also informed through our collaboration with CancerX Moonshot, a public–private partnership launched by the Department of Health and Human Services, to boost human-centered digital innovation and explore the root causes of health inequity and financial toxicity in cancer. Kaiser Permanente’s Cancer Support Line is just one part of the ongoing effort towards achieving the goals of the #NationalCancerPlan and to #EndCancerAsWeKnow It. This work is critical to achieving the plan’s goals, but #Every1HasARole in the success of the plan. #NationalCancerPlan #Every1HasARole #CancerMoonshot #EndCancerAsWeKnowIT

⚡ Youth Cancer Europe and SIOP Europe, the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE) organised an insightful Online Roundtable focused on AYA #cancercare. Our discussions delved into topics such as financial and infrastructural barriers, as well as clinical, legal, and ethical challenges hindering the improvement of AYA services across Europe 🎗️. 🌍 Alongside healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient advocates, we explored together health policy decisions that Member States could consider moving forward in support of a standardised approach for AYA Care, and we talked about the examples of what we have seen during the Peer Visits we conducted over the last summer. 💭 The outcome was the provision of practical recommendations for policies concerning the treatment and care of adolescents and young adults with cancer. 👉 Read more about it here - https://lnkd.in/dduGw_hs European Network of Youth Cancer Survivors
