Culture's contribution to climate change... As we look ahead to the UNFCCC UN COP 29 in Baku, the conversation around climate change is expanding beyond carbon emissions and renewable energy. It’s time to bring the preservation of cultural heritage into the spotlight. Climate change isn't just an environmental issue; it’s a cultural one, too. When rising sea levels swallow coastal sites or extreme weather erases indigenous knowledge systems, we lose pieces of our shared human history. COP 29 presents a unique opportunity to address these intersections head-on. We need global leaders to consider cultural heritage not as a passive victim of climate change but as an active contributor to climate solutions. Traditional knowledge and practices, often rooted in centuries of adaptation to local environments, could guide us towards more resilient, sustainable strategies.
