Recently, I had the opportunity (thank you, Arup!) to attend the WCSC 15th Conference at M-Resort & Hotel, Kuala Lumpur with this year’s theme entitled "Revitalising Kuala Lumpur through Innovative Urban Regeneration." It was indeed a mix of rekindling networks within the industry and also meeting new friends, whom I look forward to collaborate in the near future. That said, these were the key takeaways I found useful around urban regeneration best practices and case studies presented throughout this conference: 1) Environmental Sustainability - 2 Principles A) Measurable tools for climate risk and adaptation in spatial planning - ie Nusantara Capital City B) Sustainable Site Planning & Management through masterplanning, esp. around water and energy use - ie Merdeka 118 2) Social Inclusivity - 3 Principles A) Heritage and Culture as key drivers for urban regeneration and adaptive reuse initiatives - ie Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Downtown KL precinct B) Revaluing TOD developments as drivers of social cohesion and inclusivity to connect (Not divide!) cities to people and communities - ie Nusantara Capital City, Fukuoka-Tokyo TOD C) People Centred Approach in urban planning and decision making process, with an emphasis on empathy and transparency - ie DBKL, Nusantara Capital City, Malaysia’s upcoming Urban Renewal Act. 3) Economic Prosperity- 3 Principles A) Urban Regeneration as means of attracting new businesses and revitalising local economies - ie Battersea Power Station, London’s Olympics Stadium B) Generating Employment opportunities via Infrastructure Projects and Regeneration Projects - ie Battersea Power Station, Merdeka 118, Downtown KL C) Value Creation through regeneration projects leads to higher tax revenues and increased property value - ie Battersea Power Station, Fukuoka - Tokyo TOD As city planners continue to influence how cities evolve, I like how Datuk TPr Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif quotes the importance of “4Ps”, Public-Private-People Partnership, which will make or break urban development challenges, moving ahead.

Technology and nature: is this the perfect smart city? With limited land and a growing population, Singapore needs help from smart city technologies to maximize its resources and meet the needs of its citizens. Through its Smart Nation initiative, Singapore integrates technology into daily life, improving efficiency and sustainability. Green spaces, like gardens by the Bay, and innovations in urban planning, such as vertical gardens and eco-friendly buildings, reflect Singapore's commitment to environmental sustainability. Can this balance of technology and nature make Singapore a model for future cities? #engineering #smartcities #Civilengineering #urbanism For more: 📌 Follow #ImpressiveEngineering 📌 Click on the 🔔 and select "All"

Our commitment to adaptive reuse has evolved from projects like the Seletar Aerospace Park's colonial black and white houses to flatted factories in one-north, and now reaches Kallang Way with a pilot project in collaboration with industry partners. This innovative approach prioritises environmental responsibility by minimising construction waste and reducing carbon emissions. The project retains a key piece of Singapore's industrial heritage – the last remaining three-storey "Terrace-Showroom" type factory – while transforming its first floor (2,000 sqm) for modern industrial use. This adaptive reuse is estimated to abate an impressive 5,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 1,000 cars from the road annually. Ar. Melvin HJ Tan, President of the Singapore Institute of Architects, said, “We believe the architectural community will embrace this challenge and develop innovative design solutions that augment both the development and user experience. With JTC’s industrial master plan constantly evolving, the adaptive reuse framework will help to anchor Singapore’s industrial past with its future. SIA looks forward to working closely with JTC to build this vibrant and dynamic way forward.” Click the link to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gYhJwTA2 #BuildingIndustries #Sustainability #Masterplanning Hsiao-Ling Tang Kwang Yi Goh Jan Seow Eugene Lim Yvonne Lim

Today was my second day at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok. Highlight for me was again a session about sustainable cities with Niramon Serisakul Gareth Davies Maria Golda Paz Hilario Mana Saza. A few remarks: Golda Paz from Manila: people in cities have mostly bigger problems than asking themselves if there city is sustainable. For example accessible public transport. Mana from Tokyo: Tokyo is working hard on green infrastructure. For example a Highline NYC inspired Green Mile. Gareth, CTO: the role of data and the importance of proper master planning. Niramon from Bangkok: the role of third parties in urban development is crucial. And the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in urban development. A lot of information to digest, but very inspiring! Global Sustainable Development Congress Urban Design and Development Center #gsdcongress #urbanism UrbanSphere Solutions

Frasers Property commits to green path in expanding industrial development with the upcoming LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building projects as consulted by ARDOR Green. --- 🌿 In September, we broke ground the first North Industrial & Logistics on Industrial Centre Yen Phong 2C in Bac Ninh province, North Vietnam. This is our maiden project stemming from our partnership with Gelex Group announced earlier this year. Over the next two to three years, we plan to expand our industrial and logistics portfolio in both northern and southern with approximately 680,000 square metre of industrial facilities with dedicated social and wellness amenities for occupiers. --- ♻ Our Industrial and Logistics developments go beyond expectation as we comprise smart, modern, and sustainable industrial estates designed to our Premium Estates Concept that aims to bring an operation-at-ease place with enhanced workplace productivity and occupiers’ health and wellbeing. We are aiming for LEED certification for all of our I&L properties as a minimum. These premium industrial estates will not be limited to traditional sheds and warehouses, but instead are future-ready infrastructure that positively impacts the people that work within the space, as well as the wider community. --- 👏 At Frasers Property Vietnam, our efforts are guided by the Green Mark scheme, as well as internationally-recognised certifications such as LEED, which entail incorporating resource efficient features and design elements that enhance occupants’ productivity, health and wellbeing. The second one is partnering and supporting green building organization such as a key partner is the Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC). We support the VCBC by participating in the Technical Advisory Committee, sharing our expertise in green building design and materials, as well as green financing. --- #FrasersProperty. #FrasersPropertyVietnam. #USGBC. #LEED. #ARDORGreen. #Sustainability. #Health. #Wellbeing. #NetZero2050.

At the World Cities Summit, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced that Singapore will invest S$1 million in a 3-year project led by researchers from the A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Commissioned by Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) and Housing & Development Board, this study builds on existing research on the impact of the built environment on physical health and the mental well-being benefits of greenery. The findings could help shape Singapore’s future urban planning to enhance health and livability. Additionally, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) also announced a partnership with the Singapore Management University to tackle urban heat through map technology.
