Burn out can be a daily reality for many people with ADHD such as my self. I feel too much — physically and emotionally. I fight with emotional regulation, impulsivity, and big feelings. And when I’m stressed, I feel everything more intensely. With help from my adhd counsellor, I have been able to regulate myself better before I reach burnout. I have learned to share my sensitivities and grant myself timeouts! Talk to your supervisor or colleagues and ask for support. Openly communicate what’s causing you stress and work together to build a supportive and calming workplace.

ADHD is often explained through the lens of how others experience us—our challenges can be hard for them to navigate. But what about our internal experience? For example, executive dysfunction often gets described as "trouble finishing tasks or tying up loose ends." Yet, for me, it's the intense overwhelm caused by "too much" or "not enough" that keeps me stuck there. This perspective deserves more space in the conversation because internal experiences can help us know where to help and with what.
