A few notes from this article that stand out: - In 2024, hotels across the US are expected to collectively shell out $123 billion in compensation — up more than 20% from 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing data from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. - Hotels are still paring back amenities like daily housekeeping services, which were originally reduced or eliminated entirely during the pandemic. Some 70% of hotels have reduced or eliminated amenities and services on-site in response to staffing shortfalls. - In addition, the workers that are on staff are being asked to do more, such as check in guests at the front desk and mix up beverages behind the bar when needed, per The Journal, while the same employees that are doing laundry are helping with housekeeping duties. #hotelier #hotel #hotelmanagement #hotelsales #hotelmarket #hospitality #hotelpayroll #boutiquehotel

Hotel Staff Shortages Could Push Rates Up In order to offset labor shortages that have been plaguing the hotel industry since the pandemic, hoteliers have increased wages to attract workers. The level of service remains below pre-pandemic levels though, and hotel rates continue to increase, in part to make up for the rising wages, the Wall Street Journal reports. Hotel staff compensation is up 20% from 2019, but daily housekeeping, room service and more amenities are down compared to then. “The services are all back, but I think the way in which people expect them to be delivered is a little different,” said Rachel Moniz, chief operating officer of HEI Hotels & Resorts. “A lot of people are fine if you’re not necessarily doing a big formal fussy room service.” https://lnkd.in/emYKe7Xw #hospitalitymanagement #hospitalityleadership #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #humanresources #humanresourcesmanagement #rates #rateincreases #priceincrease #hotels #hotelsandresorts #financialnews #financeandeconomy #economicrecovery #economicnews

The most recent U.S. jobs report contained an interesting tidbit: The American leisure and hospitality workforce is back to pre-pandemic levels. But don't get too excited — There was a hotel labor shortage long before the pandemic...and all of the major hotel companies like Marriott International, Hilton and IHG Hotels & Resorts have made tweaks to operations (daily housekeeping being the most obvious) to adjust to the new normal. We business travelers shouldn’t forget about the housekeepers when staying at a hotel. Unlike front desk workers, hotel housekeeping works for tips (particularly in the United States). “Leave a tip for the housekeeper. They make the least amount of money in the hotel and have the hardest jobs. They appreciate it big time,” one hospitality worker suggested. As a general guideline, the American Hotel and Lodging Association recommends $1 to $5 per night, depending on the type of hotel. The best option is to hand the cash directly to the housekeeper, but this isn’t always possible.
