The Foundation of Sustainable Agriculture As an Agronomist specialising in soil health, I'm passionate about building the foundation for sustainable and productive farming systems. My work focuses on nurturing this precious resource to support robust crop growth and resilience. Soil Testing: I assessed soil quality and developed strategies for improvement, including organic matter management and balanced nutrient profiles. Sustainable Practices: I implemented minimal tillage, organic fertiliser use and cover cropping to reduce environmental impact. Yield Optimization: I implemented 4R nutrients projection, boosting crop yields Farmer Partnerships: I work closely with farmers to advocate soil health practices such as the right time for placing residue, the right application and herbicide dosage that is both environmentally and economically viable. 🌾 Advancing Agricultural Sustainability: Insights from the Spanish Living & Policy Lab On 28 November, the second edition of the Spanish Living & Policy Lab convened over 25 stakeholders, including policymakers, biorefinery experts, farmers, cooperatives, and biomass associations. Together, they explored pathways to advance agricultural sustainability through innovative farming systems and crop diversification. Key highlights from the event: 🌱 Trials and agronomic results with camelina and carinata in Spain  🐄 Insights from Aira cooperative on using camelina and carinata cake in animal feed  📋 Updates on regulations, support frameworks, certification, and bioproduct markets The event was organized by Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España in collaboration with regional cooperative federations and CARINA partners, including Camelina Company , Kimitec, Nuseed, and The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). 💡 Let’s talk about solutions! During the last cross visit in Poland, partners, experts and farmers were able to see the solutions already implemented on the farms visited. 🍃 Bronislaw Kazberuk's family farm is located in Podozierany, Grodek, and it is characterized by the diversity of activities, ensuring self-sufficiency and profitability. Farm activities are: 80% cereal (human and animal consumption), 5% cold-blooded Polish horses for meat production, 5% Limousines for beef production, 5% agroforestry exploitation, and 5% machinery services to others.  The main cereal produced is buckwheat which flowers are used by neighbor’s bees to make honey and spread the seeds. Normally, a secondary crop such as mustard is used when buckwheat, the main cereal, gets harvested in order to avoid having bare earth as long as possible. ↗️ What are the benefits of diversification?  ▪️ To generate income from different activities.  ▪️ To avoid dependency on a single activity in case of crisis.  ▪️ To be less dependent on external price fluctuations.  ▪️ To increase biodiversity, soil quality and food quality.  ▪️ To amortize earlier the machinery. ↘️ What are the disadvantages of this solution?  ▪️ Family income relies mainly on the price of the cereal (80%)  ▪️ Increased workload.  ▪️ Requirement of more skills.  ▪️ Important initial investment (land, machinery, etc.). Yesterday in the stunning #Gargano area of Puglia, renowned for its olive cultivation and the Gargano National Park, we conducted a #stakeholder consultation event. The session featured the presentation of our #AgroEcology_Italy project to a diverse group, including large and smallholders, representatives from farming associations and cooperatives, local municipalities, agronomists, and individuals interested in innovative agricultural practices. Notably, it was inspiring to see many younger generations of farmers participate, showing a keen interest in #sustainability and #innovation. Encouraged by financial incentives and the notion of building #resilience in these ecosystems, these young farmers are open to adopting new practices, signaling a hopeful future for agriculture in our region. The discussions centered on the principles of carbon farming and regenerative agriculture, highlighting their potential to boost sustainability, promote #environmental #health, and generate additional #revenue in #olive groves.
