We got a new PhD graduate! On Monday, 2nd of December, Eulàlia Pujades-Otero, PhD defended her PhD thesis "Nanocarbons and mediators for energy storage". When asked about what advice would she give to future PhD candidates, she said: "My advice would be to set clear goals, stay organized, and seek feedback regularly. It's important to maintain a healthy work-life balance and to be open to learning from setbacks. Staying patient will also help you navigate the challenges of the PhD journey." "I would also like to highlight the importance of taking advantage of the resources available at ICMAB. The mentorship program now available, for instance, is really interesting and something I would have greatly benefited from during my own PhD. Having a mentor who can guide you on issues beyond the scientific day-to-day of your PhD can be incredibly valuable. So, please take advantage of having a mentor at ICMAB; it can make a significant difference in your PhD experience." "Remember that your research has the potential to make a significant impact, so stay motivated and focused on your goals. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD, today announced a €14.6 million investment in 25 projects to support early career researchers under the SFI-IRC Pathway programme. The awards will enable postdoctoral researchers to develop their career pathway and transition to become independent research leaders. The funding, covering a four-year period, will provide additional support for a postgraduate student who will be primarily supervised by the awardee. Minister O’Donovan said: “This Pathway funding will help facilitate a defined journey from post-doctoral research to independent researcher. ☝ It's valuable to have other PhD-students as colleagues nearby! 🔊 My experiences During the initial phase of my PhD journey, I lacked nearby PhD-student colleagues, and I felt the absence of like-minded individuals. However, I had the privilege of engaging with fellow PhD-students from various departments at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, as well as at @ORU at Odense University Hospital. Thankfully, Merete Celano Wittenkamp has recently joined as a fellow PhD student and now occupies the office adjacent to mine at Gentofte Hospital. What a pleasure to have daily 'tete-a-tete’ conversations with a like-minded! 💡 My considerations Some cconsiderations for the importance of having a fellow PhD student: ▶ Peer support and understanding: Fellow PhD students can relate to the challenges and experiences unique to doctoral studies, providing a supportive environment where individuals can share struggles, successes, and strategies for overcoming obstacles. ▶ Intellectual stimulation: Interacting with colleagues can foster intellectual exchange, sparking discussions, debates, and collaborations that enrich the research process and contribute to academic growth. ▶ Emotional support: Doctoral studies can be emotionally challenging, and having a supportive community of peers can provide emotional reassurance, motivation, and solidarity during periods of stress, self-doubt, or uncertainty. 👉 Your experiences and considerations What are your experiences and considerations of having fellow PhD-students? #PhDstudent #shareddecisionmaking #decisionaid #cocreation
