Nigeria took a significant stride in combating climate change in 2021 through the enactment of the #Climate Change Act. This historic legislation, the first of its kind in West #Africa, laid the groundwork for a greener future by setting targets for achieving net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2070. VIISAUS has played a pivotal role in climate advocacy. Collaborating with global and continental stakeholders. This time, we partnered with IDH, an organization committed to transforming landscapes through global collaboration, to embark on a collaborative advocacy campaign in the communities around the #Okomu Forest Reserve in Edo State, Nigeria. This partnership aimed to foster a community-driven approach to sustainable conservation. From awareness-raising campaigns to strategic meetings, we utilized rigorous means to convey our message. At the end of the exercise, we discovered a 40% increase in awareness and knowledge of forest management among host communities within the Okomu landscape has been achieved. Additionally, we marked a 25% surge in willingness to actively participate in #conservation initiatives. It might interest you to know that: 1. Okomu is the largest remaining rainforest in southwest Nigeria. 2. It contains a viable population of the rare white-throated guenon (Cercepithicus erythrogaste)r, an endemic monkey species in southwest Nigeria, and several other species of international concern. Happy World Environment Day! This year, we are observing World Environment Day with the theme "Accelerating land restoration for drought resilience in Zambia." The country is currently facing the impact of severe droughts, intensified by climate change. Water scarcity from these droughts has not only affected ecosystems but has also had a ripple effect on sectors such as energy. Urban areas are experiencing frequent power cuts, sometimes more than 12 hours, leading people to rely on charcoal as their main source of energy. This increased pressure on forests is contributing to high deforestation rates. It's clear that there is a connection between land degradation, droughts, and energy instability, emphasizing the interconnectedness of our actions on the environment and their widespread impact. Let us renew our commitment to protecting the environment, fostering sustainable practices, and prioritizing land restoration efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable future for Zambia and the planet. 📸 MC team #LandRestoration #Worldenvironmentalday #Protectingnature #CombatingClimateChange #SustainablePractices #MusekeseConservation #KNP #MumbwaGMA #KasonsoBusangGMA #Greaterkafueecosystem #Zambia

Polaris Bank’s Tree Planting Initiative: Model for CSR and Sustainable Development in Nigeria Polaris Bank’s partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) to initiate a tree planting project at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) marks a significant step towards promoting sustainability and combating climate change in Nigeria. This initiative exemplifies a commendable commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development, reflecting positively on Polaris Bank, the environment, and the broader community. Positive Impacts on CSR and Sustainable Development 1. Environmental Restoration and Climate Change Mitigation: o The initiative aligns with the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) by focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. o Tree planting helps in combating deforestation, which has drastically reduced Nigeria’s forest cover from 30% to between 6-8%. This effort contributes to reversing this trend, aiding in land restoration and improving the country’s ecological balance. https://lnkd.in/du_Bc3DZ #polarisbank #csrnews

During the 'Accelerating Nature-Based Solution Conference' last week in Livingstone, I met the Alternative Nobel Prize Winner and "Forest Maker" Tony Rinaudo 🌳. Have a look at the trailer of the award-winning movie about Tony's work and mission: https://lnkd.in/d2wPEfdj 🎥 The very severe drought that currently hits Zambia and the entire Southern Africa region 🌡☀, send a strong call for more climate action and sustainable management of natural resources. Investing in Nature-Based Solutions and in integrated watershed management will increase climate change adaptation and resilience of smallholder farmers to droughts. Business as usual is not an option and we need to look into innovative approaches that recover and regenerate Africa's natural capital. Greener Land Makes a Cooler Planet 🌳🌦🌍. #EuropeanGreenDeal #ForestMaker #NaturBasedSolutions

Africa's Reforestation Efforts🌳 A unique reforestation project in Africa is showing real promise in the fight against desertification and poverty. Trees for the Future (TREES) is empowering farmers to plant biodiverse forest gardens These gardens not only restore degraded land but also provide families with food, protect the soil, and increase tree cover. The results are impressive! The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) certainly thinks so and last month awarded it the status of World Restoration Flagship. TREES is a model for reforestation that can be replicated around the world. Let's celebrate this positive step towards a greener future!🌱 #reforestation #africa #goodnews #environment #sustainability #TREES

Over a million species are at risk of extinction in this century. Desertification affects 2 billion people globally. Up to 40% of the worlds lands are degraded, effectively affecting half of the population and so on. Something needs to change fast. When it comes to conservation, sharing experience and best practices, policy-based research and policy-implemented research plus community led conservation is a climate change solution. Pastoralists too are part of the solution and not the problem. As we know, Africa’s silver-bullet is it’s youthful population. So are we really going succeed if we don’t involve 70% of the population?Youth and women’s organizations not receiving equitable funding, yet they are the ones working directly on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Long term funding led by local needs, scalable, replicable financing is the way to go. Funding also needs to be of all types of lands to achieve the collective goal, not just forests, but also mangroves, peats, swamps and all carbon sinks collectively to achieve net zero. We can be the ancestors the future generations look back to with gratitude. #GLFAfrica #biodiversity #finance #youth #Africa #conservation #sustainable
