VIISAUS’ Post

Nigeria took a significant stride in combating climate change in 2021 through the enactment of the #Climate Change Act. This historic legislation, the first of its kind in West #Africa, laid the groundwork for a greener future by setting targets for achieving net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2070.   VIISAUS has played a pivotal role in climate advocacy. Collaborating with global and continental stakeholders. This time, we partnered with IDH, an organization committed to transforming landscapes through global collaboration, to embark on a collaborative advocacy campaign in the communities around the #Okomu Forest Reserve in Edo State, Nigeria. This partnership aimed to foster a community-driven approach to sustainable conservation.   From awareness-raising campaigns to strategic meetings, we utilized rigorous means to convey our message. At the end of the exercise, we discovered a 40% increase in awareness and knowledge of forest management among host communities within the Okomu landscape has been achieved. Additionally, we marked a 25% surge in willingness to actively participate in #conservation initiatives. It might interest you to know that: 1. Okomu is the largest remaining rainforest in southwest Nigeria. 2. It contains a viable population of the rare white-throated guenon (Cercepithicus erythrogaste)r, an endemic monkey species in southwest Nigeria, and several other species of international concern.   Want to learn more about how this process unfolded from start to finish?
