📃Scientific paper: Direct detection of dark matter: a critical review Abstract: The nature of the dark matter in the Universe is one of the hardest unsolved problems in modern physics. Indeed, on one hand, the overwhelming indirect evidence from astrophysics seems to leave no doubt about its existence; on the other hand, direct search experiments, especially those conducted with low background detectors in underground laboratories all over the world seem to deliver only null results, with a few debated exceptions. Furthermore, the lack of predicted candidates at the LHC energy scale has made this dichotomy even more puzzling. Following on from my previous post, I am delighted to share my final undergraduate project: Dark Matter Direct Detection. This project combined elements from many of my undergraduate modules, including Atomic Physics, Particle Physics, Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Scientific Computing. I am thrilled to have received a first-class mark for this project, as well as for the module overall, which also included several report writing and presentation tasks. Abstract: The search for dark matter remains one of the most compelling topics in physics. Despite decades of searching, conclusive evidence of a direct detection remains elusive. We explore the factors that contribute to a model for the expected number of events for different hypothetical Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) masses, considering factors from nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics. This model is then examined for a number of different detector nuclei, establishing and exploring the relationship of heavier nuclei being superior for heavier WIMP masses, and vice-versa. The assumptions made in this model are examined and a brief overview of other experiments is given. Finally, the investigation delves into the importance of the WIMP-Proton cross section and its continuously diminishing threshold, which casts doubt on the WIMP's status as the primary dark matter candidate.

Setting new limits to quantum gravity. Researchers from the IceCube Collaboration have set new limits to the neutrino–quantum gravity interactions. They analyzed more than 300000 neutrinos created in the Earth atmosphere when high-energy particles from space collided with molecules from in the air. According to the actual models, if quantum gravity exists, the space-time's quantum fluctuations would affect the way neutrinos oscillate, and that's what the scientists were looking for. In their study, such effect was not observed, but that could be because the neutrinos originating in the atmosphere travels such a short distance, that the oscillations have almost no time to be affected. Nonetheless, the atmospheric neutrinos were chosen because there are lots of them that can be detected compared to those coming from space. In fact, the researchers hope future developments in neutrino detectors will allow to use those for a new study in which the effect, if it's real, could be finally observed. Ready for AUGER’s next phase: GSSI’s collaboration with the Pierre Auger Observatory, which includes five faculty members, two postdocs, and three PhD students, will continue as the detector undergoes its upgrade. The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world’s largest cosmic ray detector, spanning an area of 3000 km² in the Pampa Amarilla (Argentina). It is operated by a collaboration of over 400 scientists from 17 countries. The data collected by the Observatory has revolutionized our understanding of high-energy phenomena, particularly those linked to the most violent processes in the Universe, such as ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Once upgraded, the detector will be capable of gathering new data on the primary mass of the highest-energy cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. GSSI researchers, in collaboration with the University of L’Aquila group, will play a key role in the phenomenological interpretation of the new data from Phase II of the Auger Observatory. Their work will involve developing models of cosmic ray sources that reproduce the new measurements and investigating the potential for finding evidence of heavy dark matter. #GSSI #Physics #PierreAugerObservatory
