Over the past week, Guwahati has experienced a significant deterioration in air quality due to construction dust and rising temperatures, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 204 on March 14, indicating a 'poor' category. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board shows a consistent increase in AQI levels to 'poor' and 'very poor' categories throughout March, particularly at the Panbazar station. The situation has been worsened by ongoing construction projects across the city, contributing to dust pollution and PM 2.5 levels. Despite a brief improvement following a major project inauguration, AQI levels have again fallen into the 'poor' category. PM 10 levels reached a peak of 485 on March 14 and remain high. PM2.5 particles are known to penetrate deep into the lungs, while PM10 particles cause tissue damage and inflammation. Officials attribute the poor air quality to the dusty season and the numerous development projects, suggesting that controlling construction activities and sprinkling water in construction areas could help improve AQI. Guwahati is currently undergoing several construction projects that contribute to the dust problem, impacting the city's air quality. The Kalughat Inland Waterway Terminal (IWT), situated along the northern bank of the #GangaRiver in Saran District, Patna, Bihar, was inaugurated in February 2024. The terminal, which provides direct access to National Highway-31, is expected to boost regional trade and enhance cargo movement via Raxaul and the hinterland of North Bihar. However, the riverbank in this region faced severe erosion due to the high flood levels during the monsoon season. These hydraulic forces destabilized the riverbank and caused scouring of the riverbed, posing significant threats to local infrastructure and the safety of nearby communities. To address these challenges, Maccaferri’s flexible and sustainable solutions were installed in 2022, well ahead of the terminal's inauguration, as part of the terminal's planning by IWT. These solutions were chosen over conventional riprap measures, as they are not only economical but also environmentally friendly and easy to install, making them ideal for long-term protection. For riverbank protection, Reno Mattresses were installed along a 600-meter stretch of the slope, complemented by a gabion toe wall for toe-protection. For riverbed protection, a 21-meter launching apron using Reno Mattresses was deployed as a scour protection measure. Additionally, MacTex N (non-woven geotextile) was placed beneath the mattresses for separation and filtration purposes, enhancing the stability and durability of the structure.
