[Rwanda Space Agency Sign MoU with Polish Space Agency for Development Initiatives] Rwanda Space Agency and the Polish Space Agency have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance partnership opportunities – marking a significant milestone in bilateral collaboration between Rwanda and Poland in space technology. The MoU aims to leverage the robust Polish space ecosystem to develop collaboration on activities of mutual interest and solidifies the commitment of both nations to harness space capabilities in support of their development agendas. It fosters interagency cooperation between industries and academia to advance capabilities in space technologies, facilitating knowledge transfer and promoting tailored research and development initiatives. Col. Francis Ngabo emphasized, “Rwanda is dedicated to leveraging space technology capabilities to support the sustainable development of priority sectors within Rwanda. This collaboration with the Polish Space Ecosystem through POLSA opens up unique avenues for joint initiatives and knowledge exchange to boost the growth of our emerging space sector.” Prof. Gregorz Wrochna, President of POLSA, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This partnership between Rwanda and Poland underscores the urgency of addressing pressing challenges through collaborative and innovative approaches. In 2019, an international agreement was sealed on guidance for the long-term sustainability of outer space activities. 🌍🛰️ This pivotal agreement underscores the significance of global cooperation in prioritising space sustainability. It presents a compendium of internationally recognised measures and commitments to ensure that our space activities remain secure and sustainable for future generations. While these guidelines are voluntary and non-legally binding, they represent a substantial advancement towards responsible space exploration and utilisation. This achievement emphasises the crucial role of collective endeavours in safeguarding our orbital environment. It provides an excellent survey of the space aspirations of several nations. Authors include: myself (US), @lincolnhines (China), Saadia M. Pekkanen (Japan), Rajeswari Pallai Rajagopalan (India), Sangwoo Shin (S. Korea), Brian Gallant & Jordan Miller (Canda), Cassandra Steer (Australia), Hema Nadarjah (Singapore). I was quite honored to be asked to write the piece on US space efforts and plans and to step into the footsteps of the legendary John M. Logsdon who wrote that section the last publication. The event might be over, but we are still inspired by what we heard recently. This year, the European Space Forum took place in Brussels for the fourth time centering around the topics of sustainability, competitiveness and the importance of being able to independently access and use space as a strategic asset. We were very interested to listen to the priorities of the EU Council Presidencies, in which the Belgium as the outgoing one highlighted the need to strengthen security and resilience, while also looking at the competitiveness of the #EU space sector. The incoming presidency Hungary highlighted the benefit of space for EU SMEs that can become global leaders in their field, but also stressed the need for a peaceful cooperation in space of all nations. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) outlined space as a strategic domain that faces important sustainability issues. Namely:  Overcrowding in certain orbits and Space Debris as well as security challenges. The European Commission set out its goals around IRIS² and the upcoming space law, that can be expected in early 2025 – focusing on resilience, security and sustainability. Throughout the two days of the conference we heard calls for more competitiveness by various space actors to overcome global challenges for the European Industry. Furthermore the EU was called to lead by example and set ambitious sustainability targets that can serve as a catalyst for further global regulation. The #collaboration between ASI and EgSA will facilitate #investments in the #space sector by the #industries involved in this sector, which together with the space agencies, could develop projects and #initiatives of common interest at a Mediterranean level, in #Africa and internationally.
