EU-ASEAN space cooperation 🛰️🌏 "ASEAN member states have space aspirations, but their progress is complicated by a lack of regional cooperation and being caught in an emerging “astropolitics” between the US and China," writes Tarapoom Panpin. KEY TAKEAWAYS: 🚀 The new space age is attracting diverse actors, yet the high space exploration cost prevents developing nations from fully participating. 🚀 The US and China are taking advantage of developing nations’ space aspirations to support their respective goals through their multilateral treaties. 🚀 Despite their goal of space aspiration, ASEAN member states have failed to initiate regional space cooperation, thus providing an opportunity for enhancing EU-ASEAN cooperation. 🔗 Read more insights from our guest author here: https://lnkd.in/efx6rwFB

🚀 Lithuania has become the 40th country to sign the Artemis Accords, a declaration of commitment to the transparent, sustainable, and peaceful exploration and use of space. As Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs G. Landsbergis has stressed, Lithuania has taken one more important step in strengthening the strategic partnership between the US and Lithuania. 🇺🇸 🤝 🇱🇹 The Lithuanian space industry has been consistently growing since 2021, when the country became an associated member of the European Space Agency (ESA). Lithuanian research institutions and space companies are successfully entering international supply chains and taking part in international programs. Grounded in the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, the Artemis Accords encourage international cooperation to ensure that the benefits of space are shared by all. They are a vital foundation for responsible behavior in this new “Golden Age” of space exploration. For more information, please visit https://lnkd.in/e9Wnzmab. #ArtemisAccords #Space #

Some thoughts on the Lowy Institute with Dr. Cassandra Steer Steer, focusing on mainstreaming civil space partnerships in the Australia-Japan relationship. We looking at space diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region, spanning areas such as regional development, disaster response, and technology collaboration.
As Australia gets ready to host the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum #APRSAF next week, Andre Kwok and I wrote about the opportunity of space technology collaboration as a policy lever. Japan fully understands this opportunity, as the country that initiated #APRSAF and leads the meeting each year, which serves as a form of civil space partnerships in the region, and also serves as a diplomatic tool, a means to reach shared policy ends in the Asia-Pacific region. We advocate for Australia and Japan to elevate their growing bilateral security and civil space relationships for a more resilient and prosperous Asia-Pacific region. https://lnkd.in/eHa3NDG3

For a limited time, you can download a free PDF of Asia’s Space Ambitions, a multi-author piece just published in 𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑎 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑦 by National Bureau of Asian Research. It provides an excellent survey of the space aspirations of several nations. Authors include: myself (US), @lincolnhines (China), Saadia M. Pekkanen (Japan), Rajeswari Pallai Rajagopalan (India), Sangwoo Shin (S. Korea), Brian Gallant & Jordan Miller (Canda), Cassandra Steer (Australia), Hema Nadarjah (Singapore). I was quite honored to be asked to write the piece on US space efforts and plans and to step into the footsteps of the legendary John M. Logsdon who wrote that section the last publication. In 2020 John wrote: "𝘕𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘜.𝘚. 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Developing those rules, given the nationalistic character of current U.S. space policy, will pose a continuing challenge to international space diplomacy." I conclude with: "𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴. "If the United States works with African countries to establish rocket launch sites, that collaboration would offer substantial potential for advancing space ambitions—both for the United States and the partner country in Africa—and strengthen bilateral partnerships. African spaceports, strategically located and equipped with the necessary infrastructure, could also serve as hubs for international launches, enhancing efficiency and reducing the operational costs of global space missions. Joint investments in space infrastructure would be mutually beneficial, creating opportunities for US companies to access emerging markets and expand their global footprint." writes Temidayo Oniosun.
