The long-awaited Charities (Amendment) Act 2024 has now been enacted and awaits commencement. All Irish charities will need to familiarise themselves with the new rules. We consider some of the key highlights of this new Act and how they might impact on charities. Do we take money away from charities by working with schools and community settings?  Even though this is a common question the answer is no.  In fact it's the complete opposite.  We work with some very thoughtful schools and community settings who fundraise on behalf of charities... Looking at establishing, or perhaps you are already running, a community organisation. Have you thought if you may need to apply for an IRD number? Not-for-profits and charities are part of our communities and are created for the good of the people. We all donate to them regularly and you may even make a claim on your donations. But first IRD have to approve your claim. Types of Not-for-profits: - Charities - Education centres - Community housing providers - Sport clubs and societies and many more. Check out IRD's link & work out whether your not-for-profit organisation needs to get an IRD number. Today's International Day of Charity acknowledges the role of charity in alleviating the worst of human crises. It highlights the contribution of these organisations to more resilient and inclusive societies. - 168,893 charities were registered with the UK Charity Commission as at March 2023 - Charities in the UK spend over £40bn per year - They employ over 827,000 people - 80% of voluntary sector organisations are micro and small, with incomes of less than £100k. Why I don't like sky-diving and cake-sales raising money for charity. I've been wondering about this a lot recently due to the challenges of the economic climate and because I'm being asked for advice quite a bit on setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC). Charities and social enterprises mostly do incredible work. Like any organisation or business, some could be better, more impactful and more cost effective. Many exist in a space where there are shortcomings in provision and support for some of those struggling most in our communities. Often, they are better placed to deliver support than the state and frequently do it better. So the reason Your Own Place CIC has never (Covid aside) sought public donations via sky-diving and cake-sales, is basically because I think the work we do is worth more than people's spare change and that this approach sidelines people's suffering. Whether you agree that the state should be enlarged as a safety net or not to fund our work, surely preventing homelessness and the lives involved deserve better than the uncertainty of how many cakes were sold on Saturday afternoon? #impact #socialenterprise #housing #charity #cics #vcse #thirdsector #leadership #constitution #equity #fundraising #parity #donations
