Social Media Manager is not an entry-level position. It's not something you can just put an intern in charge of. It doesn't fall under "other duties as assigned." So, why in 2024 are people still listing social media manager as an entry-level position? If you treat social media management as an entry-level role, you can also expect entry-level results. #SocialMediaManager #SocialMediaMarketing

Social Media Manager is not an entry-level position. ❌️ Social Media Manager is not lesser than other positions. ✅️ Everyone starts somewhere. Every single person will be an entry level person when they do a job for the first time. That's not where the problem lies, and such statements only reinforce the notion that there are lesser jobs, and that those deserve lesser treatment and respect. The problem lies in considering any work "low skilled" work. It lies in using this deliberate "misconception" as a free pass at being an elitist, abusive sleaze who wants seasoned professionals for cheap, slapping that tag on your roles to achieve it. Yes, people should stop treating us terribly. Yes, the skills and talents that go into this work should be recognized. Yes, management should stop acting like this is something a 5-year-old with some crayons does for fun on their spare time. But that doesn't equal an entry level job. That equals a kid playing with crayons. It's an attempt to put those who stand at your front lines down, so they feel worthy of taking abuse for your success and peace of mind. It's yet another method of trying to reduce costs by belittling workers you don't want demanding good pay and fair treatment for a very high stress, high exposure, high risk tech job. Let's stop acting like being a rookie who is just starting out is some rite of passage shit, where you should take bad pay, and bad treatment because you're "entry level." Entry level is still a job. You devote time, effort, developed talents to do it. You deserve the appropriate pay and respect. So does someone who has been working for 20 years. Social Media Manager is absolutely an entry level j-o-b. And it's high time we stop treating those as a charitable gift by bosses to workers.

A Social Media Manager is your front-line defense, digital spokesperson, customer service manager, brand ambassador and crisis communicator rolled into one. In an ideal world with bottomless coffers, they have a team assisting in overseeing different social media channels, each with distinct audiences and tailoring an organization's messages to meet that audience's needs and channel algorithms. 😲 They ensure your brand's voice is consistent and engaging across all platforms, address customer inquiries and issues promptly and build a positive online presence that fosters community and trust among your audiences. (And if you're lucky, you'll find someone who will report on trends and performance and make recommendations, but that data and numbers crunching is a digital rant best saved for another day. 😂 ) This is NOT an entry-level role, and those who fill these roles need to be compensated fairly for the ever-expanding presence they play in shaping and maintaining an organization's reputation and overall performance. 📢 What are yalls thoughts and experience on this? Let me know! 🤓 #Communications #Marketing #SocialMedia #SocialMediaManager #Socials

This perspective is correct. However, specific responsibilities of Social Media Managers can vary greatly depending on their role within an organization; • Roles and duties are mostly influenced by the bandwidth, composition, and capabilities of the surrounding departments. • In many instances, Social Media Managers (myself included), find ourselves taking on tasks such as graphic design and video editing due to the absence of provided professionals in these areas. — a topic worthy of its own discussion but maybe for a different time. To add on that statement, some may argue it’s important to decline tasks that fall outside our “primary responsibilities”. Yet, there’s a part of me that embraces these challenges that drove me into discovering skills that enabled my growth beyond being a Social Media Manager. (Transitioning in learning pitching, designing pitch decks, crafting key messaging, voice, and a lot more. - again a topic worthy of its own discussion.) I believe an entry-level position DOES NOT necessarily equate to entry-level outcomes. I’ve witnessed firsthand how individuals in these said roles achieve beyond distinction results! Social Media Managing is an art itself and that’s 1 repost for today. See you again!

Oh, I just had to reshare this one. We're not filling intern or entry-level positions. We're a diverse, ever-evolving group of professionals from various backgrounds and degrees. We wear many hats, bridge gaps between disciplines, and bring a love of good storytelling to the digital sphere along with us. We optimize, research, plan, and pivot with the newest trends, features and algorithm changes the social media gods decide to throw at us next. We come from different educational backgrounds and adapt to new processes and ways of thinking: If we're not analytical, we learn to be. If we're not creative, we learn to be. If we're not writers, we learn to be. And when we're not posting for your brand, we're planning, reporting, creating or collaborating on assets that tells your brand story. Not every client or company sees the heavy lifting or gets to peak behind the curtain, but when you get the right professionals behind your brand, you'll see the results. I'm very fortunate to have a great group of clients who trust our social media program, and coworkers who I continue to learn from, consult and partner with. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

Also, social media strategy is not just something everyone understands or knows. It takes talent and grind to constantly know the ins and outs of media and pop culture. It takes guts to put your voice/company’s voice out there for an audience to critique. I remember that on the brink of the social media revolution, where brands created their images and built rapport with companies, self-taught social media strategists (like myself) were testing out the waters with newfound content and ROI. There was no budget and organic content was the only way forward. These were truly the moments that shaped strategy and content schedules to this day. So while this career may seem unorthodox to some and others in power may doubt its returns, social media marketing is here to stay and those who don’t invest in their media teams will see a decline in B2C sales and brand identification on both B2B and B2C fronts.

I agree with this on a multitude of levels but at the same time, this is a role that many companies, especially in companies adjacent to the games industry. I think that the reason most companies see it as an entry-level position is because they assume that anyone can do it at a high level without a college degree. This opinion is tacitly false as a successful social media manager has to know not only your company but your competitors, your customers, and the social media trends that can be applied to that industry. The trick then becomes, how can we show companies the value of a successful social media manager without placing unfair metrics on the success of a social media program?

Jon-Stephen Stansel what you say here is so true but I have given up on explaining it to companies. Social media management is a critical pillar of brand success in the ever-evolving digital communication landscape. Yet, despite its significance, the misconception persists that anyone with a smartphone can effectively manage a brand’s online presence. This oversimplification undermines the true complexity of the role. Social media management is not merely about posting pictures or crafting clever tweets. It transcends the superficial. Effective social media management requires strategic foresight, a deep understanding of consumer behaviour, brand consciousness, and digital savviness. It’s a specialized role that is pivotal to your business’s public image and overall success. The stakes are high. Entrust it to professionals who understand the complexities and can navigate the digital landscape effectively. In the end, remember this: Your business’s reputation is priceless. Handle it with the gravity it deserves.
