To all Sound Designers and Post Production Specialists: Have you recently encountered job postings using terms like "Competitive pay" and "working on high quality content"? If so, beware of offers that promise competitive pay but fall short. Remember, ₹2-3 thousand for every hour of deliverable is not competitive. It’s peanuts. Stand up for the value of your work and SAY NO to undervaluing your skills. To all the Agencies searching for Sound Designers: If you seek "Hollywood-like Audio quality," be ready to invest in it. Keep in mind that Netflix doesn't pay ₹6-9 thousand for audio post-production on a 3-hour movie. Quality work deserves fair compensation. #SoundDesign #PostProductionSpecialists #FairPay
pocket FM is hiring sound engineers now days on contractual basis. do u know how much they will pay? I was doing thier assessment for selection process but it's a lot of work. what do u think about it? I just don't want to waste my time
This is true Vishal. However, don't you think this stems from a problem of sound engineers not wanting to build a network? Being in the industry for a couple of years myself, I have observed that sound guys do not want to go to places and network with others or build relationships for the future. Theres this sense of entitlement (don't know if thats the right word to use here), that work will speak for itself. Which is absolutely untrue today. Everyone in my circles who has gone out and networked is doing well for themselves. It's the ones who think only a degree/ course or YT videos will land them good money are the ones still struggling. The audio engineering community is a small world, every relationship you build here is going to work as a stepping stone. Your thoughts?
I completely agree with this perspective and hope people don't get trapped in the so-called "competitive pay" cycle. Everyone needs to understand that reels editing is not editing (yes, it is an art), but it doesn't encompass the many technical aspects involved in feature film production, documentaries, B2B projects, and more. Story is king, but audio and video are the characters that bring that king to life, and their roles are equally crucial. Thank you for highlighting this important issue! Cheers 😁
But there are some people who ready to work even below this 2-3 thousand. They are killing the whole market. How can you fight with these type of people. Vishal Belwal
This is Like chronic disease , No budget for sound . we the sound professional always heard most often , that no budget for sound post and design . Every producer and director and Exective producer aware of importance of sound , if you ask them they will give reference to Hollywood films sound tracks , when we comes discussion of budget , we can’t afford . This is the situation of Hindi film industry . Now technology has changed each and every films and Netflix ott project completely depondent sound design and mastering . Now a days projects are outsourced for execution. Executive producer should allocate sound budget in current time . So I would say Netflix type audio quality is just virtual terms such that nobody bothers about quality sound .
Vishal Belwal I am concerned about the fresher sound engineers/designers who are looking out for jobs and they landing up to this. How are they going to learn the real sound engineer skills by taking up these jobs.
Sound in post production is major element in a movie or any other video . Audio engineers , mix engineers usually watch a movie in different aspects, like how the sound modulated , what foley is used , how the mix of entire sound edit feels like . There are lot , but some directors only know about the importance of sound in any video projects . Tumbadd is the good sound designed and sound edited movie for reference in Bollywood other than slum dog millionaire and English vinglish. If you feel , the pay is low by any client, then simply don't work for them . It's simple like that.
You know Vishal. I completely stand by your side. But, people are insecure, people are afraid and people are underskilled. Major reasons for picking up projects on low budget. I know people who happily say that “Petrol ka kharcha nikal gaya”, “Ration ka kharcha nikal gaya”, “Chalo is baar EMI ka kharcha nikal gaya”. I mean, at times it feels like its a punishment for us Sound Designers, Sound Editors & Mixing Engineers to even think of living a luxurious lifestyle. I mean forget about that, its even horrifying to think that Sound Engineers are supposed to live an Upper Middle Class lifestyle. I’m glad you shared your thoughts man!
Finding steady work in freelance audio production post-COVID has been extremely challenging. Dependence solely on this industry for survival is increasingly difficult, especially with many willing to work for very low rates. This situation can lead to exploitation. This incident serves as a prime example. Are there any social media platforms that cater specifically to our industry, notifying us of available work opportunities? It would be beneficial to have such a platform where professionals can connect and stay informed.

5moThat’s a fact and so thoughtful of your considering it. But I’d want to mention one more thing no one talks about, how a person could find good and longterm work that could support their finances. Though the world is into competition, the quality of people who couldn’t put themselves up despite of time, even having the qualities hurts a little more. People wants to accept experience more, no one sees the dedication dying inside of someone when no opportunity is been given. I hope this world be a better place for people to work and grow together.
