A must-read interview in TechCrunch! Keith Rabois is a legend in the realms of start-ups and venture capital. Returning to Khosla Ventures, after 4 years at Peter Thiel's Founders Fund is an interesting move. Yes, Khosla Ventures is a tremendously successful name brand led by a multi-decade legend in #siliconvalley who recently raised $3.1 billion for early through growth venture capital fund strategies, but LPs have indicated risks of being a dependent "one-person show" versus Founders Fund's partnership of several venture investment partners. Either way, it will be interesting to track this development, as I see Keith Rabois teaming up with Vinod Khosla akin to Luke Skywalker and Yoda. TC: Congrats on the move, though it was never crystal clear why you left Khosla Ventures in the first place after spending six years there. KR: The real reason is really simple. I hated coming down from SF to Sand Hill Road, and KV at the time — this obviously was pre-COVID — had a very strong in-person, one-office culture and it was pretty demanding from the top down that people should be in the office at least three or four days. And I just felt that the future of venture was more distributed. I remember talking to Sam Altman about the pros and cons of leaving KV for Founders Fund, which was in San Francisco; I was like, “Am I crazy to factor in this geographic commute stuff?” And he was like, “Look, every single study on human happiness suggests the single best predictor is inverse correlation to commute time, and you’re human, and you shouldn’t be shy about that.” #fundmanagers #siliconvalley #venturecapital #teams #partnerships #fundraising #founders #entrepreneurs

“if we are not standing up in [a founder’s] wedding, we’ve failed.” This quote by Ludlow Ventures' Jonathon Triest is everything that's "good" in venture capital. I was born and raised in the same Detroit community, “midwestern nice" is real and I love that it's part of my DNA. They have a saying where I grew up. "Once a Detroiter, always a Detroiter." Drives my wife crazy. I haven't found many venture capital firms that have these type of people. Then again, there are as of February, more than 500 firms in the US alone. It's a great article by TechCrunch and gives a glimpse at Treist's mantra, how they've grown, and some of their early successful calls in founders. I've been thinking about other VC people that have similar Midwestern qualities and vision in investing. I'd love to find more of them. If you know one, please share their profiles in the comments. I'd love to follow them and get to know and learn from them. Recently I think I've found a founder friendly investor in Jeff Becker of Antler. I don't know Jeff, however I like what I read on his blog and here on LinkedIn. Who else embodies similar qualities? #startups #vc #founders

Shameless self-promotion alert 😁 It’s quite hard for fund managers to talk about their fund, but in today’s busy market it’s part of the game... For me, it’s always about letting #founders talk about our work rather than us praising ourselves. Recently, I got the chance to chat with Pulse 2.0, where I had the opportunity to discuss 97212 Ventures, our mission, and our commitment to investing in top early-stage Israeli startups with a New York state of mind. At 97212, we’re all about moving early-stage Israeli #startups from zero to one, while working hard with Israeli founders on building their businesses in the US and unlocking their full potential. It’s a long journey, and we love being there at the earliest stages to help founders crawl, walk, and run. More about the evolution of our fund, and what makes us tick below. #foundersjourney #venture capital #nyctech

It's my absolute pleasure to share that I have joined Ada Ventures as a Scout. We have been in conversation for a little while, and during that time I have got to know Ada Ventures. Ada Ventures is values driven. The team's Inclusive Alpha approach towards inclusive investments embodies an inclusive lens throughout the investment process. In the work I do to empower inclusive perspective at the centre of technological development and advancement I meet phenomenal founders. Phenomenal as they are, access to capital still eludes them with negligible funding going to Black founders. In Q1’23 and Q2’23, venture only backed Black Founders with total investment of 0.74% of all venture dollars allocated. In Q3’23, investment was 0.13%, and in Q4’23 this was 0.20%, according to Dominic-Madori Davis TechCrunch. Quite clearly there is a need for me and many more - you who are reading this - to be champions for change, finding ways to drive capital towards Black founders. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Ada Ventures team who are as excited as I am to be working together. Get to know Ada Ventures too. It is an inclusive venture firm, finding and funding extraordinary talent building breakthrough ideas for the hardest problems we face. It is investing out of it's second fund. £250,000 - £1.5m in UK technology companies across climate, economic empowerment, and healthy ageing. Check out the Ada Ventures Fund II investment thesis https://lnkd.in/e_NxPKnA If your startup fits this thesis and you haven’t been in touch with Ada Ventures previously please get in touch with me. Very excited about this one. Vic Singh and I started jamming earlier in 2024 on the evolution of venture investing and who was really going deep with the latest and greatest AI offerings in the market for VCs. An introduction call (shoutout Robin Chan) turned into multiple hour long "nerd out sessions" ons LLMs for VCs and Vic was by far the furthest ahead in terms of prospective foundering mining and open source talent knowledge we had seen across 550+ emerging VCs. This is only one module but it blew us away. Today a number of VCs track LinkedIn for talent to identify prospective founders using tools like Harmonic, etc. Our thesis was this had already become table-stakes years ago and the future was AI-enabled enhance code-level tracking, monitoring, and scoring around frequency, contribution, and quality to build real profile scores to target with proper "founder idea" fit from day 0. What would take years with associates / researches can happen instantly with AI. Excited for him to not only announce the oversubscribed Seed round but also his new role with RRE Ventures to further deploy into this strategy and beyond. Our firm AAF Management Ltd. is a design partner already with some of the AI-enabled modules being produced as we bring our own systems and data into the AI revolution. Big shout out to Suzanne Rombeau Fletcher | Zelda Ventures for collaborating on the round, an AAF - The Axis Fund, L.P. emerging manager Fund I we have invested in who also joined the Seed round.

Today marks two full-circle moments in my journey as an investor and builder: 📘 Joining the Leadership Team at RRE Ventures Nearly 20 years ago I started my venture capital career at RRE learning the craft of investing. Today, I am honored to return as a General Partner, working alongside James, Raju, Stuart and Will — longtime friends and collaborators who have deeply influenced my approach to venture. Together we will serve founders from inception through growth and beyond. ⛏️ Announcing Originalis AI $5M Seed Round I am thrilled to be teaming up once again with Greg Bildson and Kwame Henderson cofounders of my last startup Kanvas Labs along with Rohan Sukhdeo to build Originalis AI - The Intelligent Composable Operating System for the Private Capital Markets. Our $5M seed round was led by RRE Ventures with support from incredible investors including AAF Management Ltd. Correlation Ventures, Flybridge, Next Wave NYC, Zelda Ventures along with a host of awesome operators and investors including Brett Gibson, Brett Martin, Frank Wooten, Lior Susan, Shafqat Islam, Trevor Zimmerman and Yusef Kassim Both full-circle moments are deeply personal - the culmination of years of tribal knowledge transformed into a platform that amplifies the art of the business - built alongside my previous cofounders and backed by the firm I am rejoining that gave a young scrappy engineer a shot at the business. Let us get after it 2025. History is written by the victors 🦾 here is the link to the announcement

Welcome to the age of the 20-something venture capitalist. The fact that young people can take a leap that wouldn’t have been possible less than a decade ago also reflects how big and unwieldy the startup ecosystem has become. It’s no longer as hub-and-spoke as it once was. No firm, even the most prominent, can extend their reach into every interesting corner. And the largest are juggling so much money that it doesn’t make sense, operationally, to deal with small sums like the kinds sought at the high-risk—but also potentially high-reward—pre-seed stage. Instead, some choose to capture those returns by becoming limited partners with the savviest of the new managers. They sure don’t make opportunity funds like they used to. Propelled by the venture boom of 2020 and 2021, nine-figure vehicles used to double down on star portfolio companies became du jour. A combination of low rates and ample limited partner dry powder overheated startup valuations like a dry cycle on a top-of-the-line Maytag. Companies with unproven—perhaps even improbable—business plans raked in cash faster than they knew what to do with it. Freeflow Ventures’ $15 million opportunity fund is a smaller take on the opportunistic raises of the last venture cycle. Learn more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gu3GzJX4
