Three observations: corporate science should not be used to generate new revenue streams. Corporate science is likely to be most effective when used to solve technical problems known to be critical to existing revenue streams. Scientists should focus on science, MBAs on identifying investment and growth opportunities. Second, market power and corporate science go hand-in-hand. That is, some degree of shielding against competition is needed for corporate science to flourish. Third, corporate structure is an important moderator of corporate science. Likely related to point 2.

A decade ago, investor Max Skibinsky highlighted that a new startup cannot rely solely on past knowledge or existing systems. This principle extends beyond ventures to any truly original idea, whether in cancer prevention or student education. Embracing intuition to navigate the unknown and unprovable is essential for innovation and progress. Intuition, often inexplicable, plays a crucial role in these intuitive leaps. These flashes of insight, the eureka moments, propel us forward significantly. Exploring the practices that foster such intuitive leaps is vital, especially in a landscape where intuition is often viewed through a decision-making lens rather than as a wellspring of creativity and innovation. Let's embrace the power of intuition to drive creativity and innovation, transcending traditional boundaries and leading the way to new knowledge for the betterment of society. Join me in harnessing our intuition to make strides in uncharted territories and bring groundbreaking ideas to fruition. #Innovation #Creativity #Intuition

A big thank you to Nina Rawal from Trill Impact for starting our November morning on such an inspiring note! Investments are always top of mind for the community at KI Science Park and KI Innovations AB, and having someone like Nina—who can truly guide us through today’s challenging investment landscape—is invaluable. Nina generously shared insights from an investor's perspective on what it takes to succeed in a tough market. Here are her three unmissable takeaways for anyone looking to attract venture capital: 1️⃣ Build World-Class Know your market from day one. Be bold. Think globally. Success demands ambition and a global mindset right from the start. 2️⃣ Products Don’t Sell Themselves World-class science is just the beginning. Knowing the right people is equally critical. Start networking early—much earlier than you think. Building the right connections takes time. 3️⃣ Entrepreneurship Isn’t for the Faint-Hearted Surround yourself with a strong team that has your back, no matter the challenges ahead. A resilient team is your greatest asset. ✨ A heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us, to A Working Lab for co-hosting, and once again to Nina for her inspiring contributions. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events! Check out the KI Science Park calendar to learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/dFVgRZSZ #CampusSolna #Hagastaden #LifeScience

Enjoyed reading “jump-starting America” by Gruber and Johnson studying the importance of the government’s investment on fundamental science enableing economical growth. As on the one hand private sector companies are not often interested in fully funding ideas that benefit other firms. On the other hand the venture capital financing systems primarily back ideas that can be commercialized easily and with relatively little capital. Thanks Jon Zuegel for the book recommendation. Today, we unveil the Venture Science Doctorate’s Mini Documentary. In health, climate, agriculture and computation, today’s challenges require speed, scale and skills like never before. PhD programs shape the deep tech workforce that solves humanity’s problems, but they’re not optimised for these challenges; they don’t attract driven, commercially-minded visionaries or under-represented groups. Featuring Dr Claire Thorne, Dr. Thane Campbell, Brett Cornick and directed by Bruno Chiecco, we wanted to offer an insight into why the Venture Science Doctorate is the alternative. Our mission? To have trained 1,000 science entrepreneurs per year, within ten years. Join a 3-year, fully-funded, sector-agnostic PhD program, running our proven innovation model. Applications for our 2024 cohort are open till March. Find the link in the comments. Dominic Falcão Ahmad Butt Aaron Appleton Lisa Shu Lindsay Gorman Bishen S. As always, great thoughts from Bruce Booth of Atlas Venture https://lnkd.in/dewT7jdy And it's so important to focus on early quality of team, science and initial data set (not excluding reasonable valuations and lean cap table)
