A Splash of Colour for Our Urban Spaces 🎄 Christmas brings a rush of colour. Our streets glow with vibrant lights, shop displays dazzle, and the scent of mulled wine fills the air. For a few glorious weeks, our surroundings feel alive, joyful, and hopeful. ⏳ But then comes January 6th. Out go the lights. Out go the displays. And we retreat into the long, dark winter, surrounded by the grey and beige tones of our cities. It’s no wonder the post-holiday blues hit so hard! 💡 Here’s a thought: What if we didn’t pack away all the colour? I’ve been inspired by how colour has transformed places: 🎨 Bright urban murals that brought depressed pensioners newfound joy. 🏠 The painted buildings of Tirana that helped reduce crime. 🌈 Students overwhelmingly say they want more colour in their communities—it energises, uplifts, and inspires. So, why not embrace it? Imagine if towns and neighborhoods could host an annual Festival of Colours! Homes, streets, and public spaces could don a curated palette of vibrant hues. Tourists would visit, local businesses would thrive, and communities would feel proud of their space. This isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating places that lift us up. 🖌 Leading paint suppliers, local artists, and communities could come together to make this happen. Melbourne dominates the festive scene, claiming six of Australia's top 10 most illuminated suburbs. Leading is Parkdale with 70 dazzling displays concentrated along Vialls Avenue, Keith Street, Mount View, Davey Street, Elliot Street, and Cedric Street. Contrary to expectations, the Christmas spirit isn't tied to affluence – Parkdale is the only top 10 suburb with house prices over $1M. Instead, three key factors light up Australia's most festive neighborhoods: 🏞️ Space: Outer suburbs with detached houses and generous gardens provide the perfect canvas for elaborate displays, unlike CBD-adjacent areas dominated by apartments and townhouses. 🎉 Community: Family-oriented outer suburbs foster strong neighbourhood connections, sparking friendly decoration competitions that create clusters of spectacular displays. 📍 Street Design: Cul-de-sacs and courts, like Jenkins Court in Craigmore (24 displays) and Jasmine Drive in Bomaderry (25 displays), create natural viewing hubs where visitors safely gather to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
