How can we address the trend among contemporary students who seem to perceive that dedicating just one hour per day at the institute is adequate for their academic progress, often neglecting homework assignments and revision? German Gyan by Nidhi Jain 🌟 If you're a student feeling like one hour a day is enough for studying German, here are some tips to help you out. First off, remember that consistent effort pays off in the long run! 💪📚 Try breaking your study sessions into smaller chunks throughout the day to keep your brain engaged. #StudySmart Don't forget the power of revision! 🔄 Reviewing what you've learned helps it stick in your memory. Set aside some time each day to go over your notes and homework assignments. #RevisionIsKey Homework might not be the most fun thing, but it's super important! 📝 It reinforces what you've learned in class and helps you practice new skills. Make a schedule to tackle your assignments bit by bit. #HomeworkHelps For German learners specifically, immerse yourself in the language as much as possible! 🇩🇪 Listen to German music, watch movies or TV shows with subtitles, and try to speak with native speakers whenever you can. #GermanLearningTips Remember, success comes from consistent effort and dedication. Keep pushing yourself, and you'll reach your goals! 👍🌟 #KeepLearning #germangyan #learngerman #germangyanbynidhijain #nidhijain

FREE WEBINAR – HAPPINESS AND ELT [Friday the 14th of June, 10:40 Athens time] This is proving to be one of my most popular presentations ever. If you have missed it so far, this is as good a chance as any to attend it. The event is free – just click on this link: https://lnkd.in/d6kErVJm Hope to see some of you there. 😊 [As always, if you think people might be interested in the talk, please feel free to share this post. 😊] HAPPINESS AND ELT ‘Why have you chosen this lesson / task / material?’ Asked this question, most teachers will give a linguistic justification (‘I want to teach them vocabulary related to travelling’). But is this the best thing we can do? Why not focus instead on making students happier? Or, better still, on both making our students happier AND improving their English? During the past decades, Positive Psychology has made great strides and we now have a solid basis of findings we can build on. In this very practical workshop, we are going to look at five principles we can make use of in class and we will illustrate each of them with an easy-to-use activity. The purpose of each of them is to increase the level of happiness among our students. Happy students are motivated students. Happy students think more effectively. Happy students learn better. What is even more important perhaps, happy students want to keep coming to our lessons. 😊

It’s been an interesting week. As usual, I’ve had lots of great discussions with students on a range of topics including: • politics • motivation and what to do when it is lacking • confidence – persuading a student that, contrary to their opinion, they can learn English • contrary – how to pronounce it when it means argumentative • how to say argumentative in German (I’m still waiting for a good answer on this one) • idioms – how to express the idea that someone talks too much • is it a patchwork family or blended family in English? • the passive voice • word transformation for the word mistake – can you think of a verb, noun, adjective and adverb based on this word? • using past simple with words/ phrases such as yesterday, last week and 500 years ago • words like cringe which have been around for a long time but suddenly get quite trendy with young people There’s never a dull moment! Outside the classroom I had a great online meet up with a group of English teachers from around the world (Spain, Peru, Chile, England and Switzerland). We’re in a support group, set up by Rachael Roberts from Earn Learn Thrive, which is proving to be really useful. Aside from all that, the cultural highlight was an Olivia Rodrigo concert at the Hallenstadion in Zurich. Admittedly I was one of the older concert goers but I may as well enjoy live music while I can. It was a fantastic evening. Hope you’ve had a good week. What were your highlights? PS My name is Adi and I teach English to students who like asking questions. Originally from the north west of England, I've been based in Zurich for more than 20 years where I teach both in-person and online.

🏆Did you know we WON our first British Council #ELTons award in 2010? Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching by Luke Meddings and Scott Thornbury Here are three reasons we think Teaching Unplugged won the 2010 Award for Innovation in Teacher Resources. 1️⃣Innovative content- The award is for innovation. This book was the first book to deal comprehensively with Dogme in ELT. There’s a detailed explanation of the core principles. Dogme is conversation-driven, materials-light, and focused on emergent language. It proposes an alternative to teacher-led training – it is an attitude shift which asks you to adopt a different way of being a teacher. 2️⃣For all levels of experience- It helps all teachers to integrate Dogme and successfully engage students 3️⃣Exploration- Teaching Unplugged is a process of exploration. Exploring a new teaching approach like Dogme involves reassessing our stock of strategies and task types, adapting some, adopting others. Features: 🖊️A bank of activities that teachers can use right away with little to no preparation. 🖊️Tips, techniques and key terms to facilitate this approach to teaching. 📖In summary: Teaching Unplugged is an invitation to reflect on the best way to learn a language and, consequently, how to teach it. Day one of the term started on a high note. I felt thrilled and motivated to do better as I thought about my students' performance last term and how I can help them to do better knowing fully well about their challenges(Most Island students don't speak Yorùbá language). I came up with some new ideas and I hope this helps them to become better students. Teaching language to non-speakers might be tasking if different strategies are not put in place to suit learners especially if there are no self motivation on the part of the learners. #yorubalanguage #nonnativespeakers #teachingyorubaasasecondlanguage
