It’s #PurpleTuesday! Making Scotland an inclusive and accessible destination – catering for those with physical and hidden disabilities, families, and the elderly – is one of our national priorities. It’s an incredibly valuable market for Scotland, 1.3 billion people live with some form of disability, representing 17% of the world’s population. That’s why we are encouraging businesses to do at least one thing over the next 12 months to improve accessibility: ☑ Improve customer service – we have staff training courses available through our partnerships with leading accessible organisations, AccessAble and PurpleTuesday. ☑ Improve accessible features – from making changes to on-site facilities to creating a detailed access guide. The Scotch Whisky Experience and Archerfield Walled Garden are doing great work in accessibility. The Scotch Whisky Experience ✔ They have enhanced their existing written access statement by creating a video access guide. ✔ Through a partnership with Deaf Action Scotland, added International Sign to their most popular tour, in addition to BSL, ASL and 18 international languages. ✔ Created a front-line team of accessibility ambassadors who can help recommend ongoing improvements based on real-time customer feedback. Archerfield Walled Garden ✔ Improved parking and access with four bays for blue badge holders close to the main entrance gates and a newly resurfaced car park. ✔ Their friendly staff are always on hand to help those who acquire assistance. ✔ Wide doorways and good spacing between café tables and in-store displays allows ease of access What will you do?

Listening to carer support professionals at the Shared Care Scotland conference today reinforced how much we in the physical activity sector could offer carers in terms of giving them short but vital breaks from their full-time and unpaid caring roles. Informal or structured physical activity could be an ideal way to relax, refuel or reconnect to people outwith the caring relationship. However, to what extent do we adapt our services to suit carers’ needs? How well do we listen to find out how we can best support their wellbeing? Are we promoting our services to potential carers - of all ages? Are we connecting to local carer support services to share what we could offer? There is so much potential for cross-sector collaboration - and so many carers who don’t even recognise themselves as such.

Each of the 22 Resolutions listed in the article have been passed. It's so important to call out gaps in accessibility for all; and even more important to drop our own gates and bias to enact change through our work in these fields. Comment below with one thing you can control in your day-to-day that can begin to bridge the gaps identified by the members of the National Federation of the Blind. https://lnkd.in/eCsV_G3S

Week Without Driving PGH starts TOMORROW! Anyone (individuals, orgs, or elected officials) can sign the pledge at weekwithoutdrivingpgh.org When you sign the pledge, you're committing to no driving for the week (Sept 30 - Oct 6). This could mean taking the bus, walking, rolling, or riding a bike-- whatever it is, leave the car at home! Does a week without a car sound daunting to you? Think about the reasons why you may feel that way. Is it because of lack of access to public transit in your neighborhood, lack of connected bikeways, or is it something else? It’s important to think about these barriers and why they exist. -- Week Without Driving PGH is hosted by @pgh4publictransit, @access_mob_pittsburgh, BikePGH, and @aarppennsylvania #WeekWithoutDriving

"With the publication of the 2017 Bus Services Act, and the National Bus Strategy for England in 2021, some bus companies are forging ahead. More and more operators are working in collaboration with disabled people during planning, vehicle purchase, and monitoring. In Northern Ireland, Translink worked with a Disabled Person’s Organisation (DPO) on the launch of the Glider service. They involved disabled people in the bus design, ticketing and testing. After the buses launched there was a 25% increase in the number of disabled passengers using the route. In Harrogate, Transport for All members recently reviewed buses with two wheelchair spaces. For the first time, local wheelchair users can catch the bus together – nobody should have to wait 40 minutes for separate buses to nip to the pub for a pint! Yet, despite these areas of progress, the percentage of bus complaints that relate to accessibility increased between 2016/17 and 2021/2022, and barriers remain." Interesting article in Passenger Transport on advancements and continued shortcomings with public transport accessibility. https://lnkd.in/eF3Q34AR
