Like so many great companies that have come before and so many that will surely follow, it is with profound gratitude and a mountain of sadness that I share that we have shut down Upside Health. I will deeply miss our products, Branch Health and Ouchie, and all they stood for.
I am immensely proud of all our team was able to accomplish:
- Supporting the lives of more than 30k people who lived in chronic pain.
- Empowering physicians across the country to enhance their care, create practice efficiencies and drive new revenue in an environment that is rife with financial challenges.
- Advocating for – and then deploying – new insurance codes that required and reimbursed more mutli-discplinary pain care.
- Building a robust, scalable and immensely caring remote nursing and care management team.
- Navigating and then clearing the FDA regulatory process.
- Developing a revenue-generating business model in an environment where very few businesses ever break beyond ideation and pilots.
To the patients, thank you for challenging us to create something meaningful and inclusive. Thank you for sharing your stories and trusting us to aid you on your journey.
To our clients, thank you for innovating with us, for questioning the status quo in care and believing that better was possible.
We were incredibly fortunate to work with inspiring investors dedicated to transformation, who were willing to take a chance on first-time (but certainly not last time) founders in an industry rife with slow sales cycles and delayed innovation, who taught us and pivoted with us and helped shape us into confident entrepreneurs.
Lastly, to our team. Over 8 years, I worked alongside so many talented individuals. How lucky I was, we were, to build together and I know we will again soon.
Eight years is a long time and Upside Health was our third child – smack in between Maisie and June. All our early deals were closed with June strapped to my chest in an Ergo and Maisie filled envelopes with swag to our earliest customers. I loved sharing my challenges and successes with the guy across from me at our dinner table and problem solving on family vacations. I loved taking client calls on car rides and watching emergency bug fixes on anniversary trips. It is so wonderful to have had a business partner who believed in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself.
What’s next? Jason and I are both consulting (me on commercialization and product, him in engineering leadership). We’ll continue to make meaningful progress in real estate until we can find our next disruptive project.
With love, Rach
