Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of patients who have struggled with the effects of dieting culture, resulting in an unhealthy relationship with food. Restriction, dieting and living in an obesogenic environment can contribute to food noise and an unhealthy relationship with food. For some, “food noise” is all consuming. Constantly thinking and feeling good/bad about food choices. It’s exhausting. It takes our energy and focus away from other areas of life. Like any disease, some people will need a medication to treat the condition. There’s no shame in that. And, a possible benefit is that anti-obesity medications reduce food noise. During the course of treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practice, stress management should be provided, so that underlying disordered thoughts, patterns and emotions around food can be addressed.
