Our Volvo BZL Electric is fast becoming a popular sight in fleets across the UK - and now it's fantastic to see them operating as far away as Perth, Australia.🌏 The first of an initial order for 18 electric buses recently entered service, with Transdev Western Australia Managing Director Bob Parton saying: “These new buses are cleaner, quieter, and more efficient - helping reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions." This delivery follows a trial of four Volvo BZL Electrics which started in Joondalup in Perth's north in February 2022. The four buses depart from the bus depot in Joondalup and are charged using a rapid charging system for electric vehicles. Since the test started, the buses have transported roughly 440,000 passengers and driven more than 380,000 km, which means that carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by around 350 tonnes. Toyota and Joby Aviation Take Flight Towards the Introduction of Air Taxis’! Toyota Motor Corporation and Joby Aviation recently marked a significant milestone in their partnership with the first international exhibition flight of Joby’s electric air taxi at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Shizuoka, Japan. Conducted near the iconic Mount Fuji, this event showcased Joby’s emissions-free aircraft and celebrated nearly seven years of collaboration, during which Toyota has supported Joby’s mission by sharing its extensive automotive manufacturing expertise. Over the years, Toyota has deepened its involvement, formalizing a long-term agreement in 2023 to supply critical powertrain and actuation components for Joby’s aircraft production. This partnership highlights a shared vision for a cleaner, more efficient future of air mobility, where Toyota engineers now work side-by-side with Joby’s team in California. “This flight brings us closer to making sustainable air travel a reality,” said JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby. He added, “We’re thrilled to present a glimpse of the future alongside Toyota.” Key attendees included Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, and representatives from Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau, who joined to witness this milestone event. The air taxi itself, designed for a pilot and up to four passengers, operates at speeds of up to 200 mph with zero emissions and significantly reduced noise compared to traditional helicopters. Joby’s vision includes providing fast, sustainable transport options for both urban and rural areas, with the potential to alleviate congestion and lessen environmental impact. Toyota’s commitment to Joby’s journey has grown stronger, recently pledging an additional $500 million to support the certification and commercial production of Joby’s electric air taxis. This brings Toyota’s total investment to $894 million, with plans to establish a manufacturing alliance in two tranches, subject to regulatory and commercial agreements.
