It's time that I confessed. Here it is: I'm not an industrial designer, nor an engineer. True, SCOOTILITY's partners Springtime Design and Engineering Design Lab expertly cover those bases now, but when I started developing the utility scooter, I was working solo. E-scooters were continuing to take off dramatically—despite their limitations, such as the lack of dedicated cargo capacity. Imagine the potential if we fixed that! Somebody should fix that, I thought. A designer or an engineer, obviously, not an urban planner with a focus on transport, like myself. But in a combination of impatience and impudence, I realized that rather than waiting for that hypothetical someone, I could plunge in myself. So down the rabbit hole I went, teaching myself what was needed to flesh out concepts and iterate model after model in CAD, design machined and sheet metal parts, analyze stresses, determine fits and tolerances passably, fake numerous other steps, and then actually build the thing, mostly in the living room (those garage-based startups don't realize how lucky they are), while profoundly depleting my personal stocks of blood, sweat, and tears (mostly sweat, thankfully). And that first proof of concept actually worked (see a couple of photos in the gif here). Of course, it was seriously simplified compared to my original concepts, but I'll be honest, there were still sighs of relief as each part fit into place and each test ride was completed. And then I did it again to design and build a second prototype iteration. One takeaway is that, in the absence of resources to hire the pros, you can nevertheless realize a vision by administering the right blend of creativity and persistence, with a light dose of insanity. But this isn't a feelgood Hollywood fable about one man overcoming the odds—I may like to dream but I'm not delusional. Not that the following point was ever in doubt, but my experience made it clearer than ever that in order to go far and go fast, a top-notch team is absolutely essential—so it's a huge boost for Scootility to partner with Springtime and EDL, who are taking the design and engineering of the utility scooter to the world-class level. The entire "Dialogue in the Darkness" exhibition is experienced in complete darkness. Before stepping into this immersive journey, each visitor is handed a white cane. For the next hour, you'll rely on your senses except for vision—feeling, hearing, even tasting—as you navigate parks, streets, cafes, and more. Guided by experts tour guides, you will explore the world in the same way as visually impaired people do every day. Our SEEARS designers & developers recently visited the Dialog Museum as a group. As one team member put it, "Everyone in our team should spend some time in our users’ shoes to understand how to better our design. 9 years ago, a group of dreamers in Santa Fe, NM cut this bus in half and stood it vertically inside of an abandoned bowling alley. This was the first thing installed for our House of Eternal Return project, Meow Wolf’s first permanent exhibition as a company. One day in 2015, I got a message on Facebook from a friend who said “I have an old bus, could Meow Wolf use it?” I went to Matt King and said “hey, could we fit a bus into the show?” He said “no, it would be too big.” But then he thought about it and said “wait, but we could cut it in half and install it vertically!” This image is a testament to wild vision and wild faith in what is possible. The power of what could be. We had never cut a bus in half before or never tried to stand one up vertically. Hell, we had never built anything to proper code or raised investment money or operated a business or had a payroll or purchased insurance or… the list goes on. We were restaurant servers and food delivery drivers and hobbyist crafts people who had very little experience in these areas but we had a few really important things going for us: We had an unwavering vision, we had an unabashed love for that vision, and we were willing to wake up every day to work our ass off to see the vision come to completion. Nothing was impossible to us. The future was filled with problems that we knew we could solve, and have an absolute blast in the process of solving them. We never let our current circumstance determine our future outcomes. Sure, there was a naievity that only “startups” really have. But there was more than that… there was a willingness to fail, a passion for simply attempting, a commitment to the profound process of creation that artists uniquely carry. 9 years later… this bus stands tall, surrounded by walls and art and lights and sound and furnishings that transformed all of our lives. 9 years later, we employ over 1000 people across 5 exhibitions across the country, including 200+ artists at our facility in Santa Fe. It hasn’t been perfect. It has been a series of difficult challenges, endless need for improvements, a non-stop attempt… but that’s what we do, we attempt impossible things, and work together to try our best to figure it out. Many of our brilliant team members are currently working on opening our Houston exhibition soon, another monumental project. I’ve seen the work that has left our facility in Santa Fe, and it is absolutely stunning — Meow Wolf is the greatest creative company in the world. And I believe that our creativity has no bounds. I’m psyched to see how the brilliance of our team can extend into many other forms of expression as we once again reach into the impossible realms.

From a vision to a venue - sometimes it takes 10 years. Many other projects get stuck somewhere in the planning, permitting or financing stages. Neighbors resist, approval processes drag on until investors have found other projects. Sometimes there is just a lack of absolute determination to make your vision a reality. Hats off and respect to the creators of RiF010, who have never missed a challenge and have always been courageous in their cause: to create a place that has never existed before in the world. This is now the new benchmark in the wave park business, but also in city marketing: a wave park right in the pulsating center of a metropolis. As a design and product engineer I’m responsible for designing new products and maintaining/improving existing product lines & manufacturing processes. I also get to help customers with any specific product or applications issues 2.     What's the typical day of a DKI employee look like? A typical day in the engineering dept at drill king starts with working on designs until someone barges in the office with the emergency of the day! Stepping out into the shop is like stepping into another world with machines humming and forklifts whizzing by. The unmistakable sound of carbide insertion for the DTH bits in the distance. Finally calls from customers helping troubleshoot any field issues which is a great feeling when it goes to plan! 3.     How would you describe your team you work with? A great mix of hard-working, friendly, meticulous, and innovative. 4.     What's the favourite part of your job? My favourite part of my job is the creative freedom, and the ability to see my creations come to life right outside my office 5.     How have you advanced professionally since joining DKI team? Helping customers in the field, representing DKI at industry trade shows and training to become certified BSI internal auditor & leading product developments 6.     Do you have any memorable achievements or favourite projects at DKI? I’ve enjoyed designing and refining our new WK casing advancement system. 7.     What current DKI products or innovations are you currently working on you can you talk about? Currently working to bring some of the innovations in the Wing King product line to our ring bit systems with a focus on cost reduction. Also have several experimental DTH bit designs that I’m eager to get tested. 8.     What is something unique or an interesting fact that people aren’t aware of? My girlfriend and I just finished building a fishpond in our back yard! 9.     What was the most recent book you read? The Tattooist of Auschwitz 10. Where on earth are you hoping to travel next? It applies equally to business, advertising, marketing and life in general. SMEs and small companies should use it. It's what big companies do to stay ahead. And yes, it's unfair because they’ve got more money to do it, but tough, that's life. The lesson is: Nothing exists in limbo. Everything exists in context. Which means that nothing is just good or bad. It's either better or worse than what it's compared to. Pepsi vs Coke. Ford vs BMW. Silver medalists vs Gold medalists – watches, hotel chains, computers, credit cards, carriers, service providers, house builders, holidays, fishing rods, steaks, retirement homes, football boots, widgets, boats, technology, kitchens, bathrooms, taps, showers, mobile phones. You name it. It applies to everything. But most thinking ignores context, so most thinking doesn't work. What works is diagnosing (not misdiagnosing) the problem and out-thinking it. If the problem is something you think you can't fix, get upstream of it and change the context. Break the problem into small pieces. And find out which piece is the 'real problem'. Then change it. It'll change everything.
