Some of my regular clients will hire very senior developers (at the sort of "distinguished engineer" level) part-time: maybe just a couple of days a week. This can be a win-win for both parties: their dev teams get some of that vast experience rubbing off on them, and it doesn't cost the company what these people would cost full-time (which is out of many businesses' price range). The developer will usually have multiple business and community interests (e.g., training, conferences, books) that they'd have to drop for a full-time gig, plus - take it from me! - a long-term regular gig solves the kinds of cash flow problems small businesses often experience. Indeed, some of the ones I've seen clients take on p/t have been semi-retired. There's a tonne of untapped knowledge and experience sitting on that shelf. It can also help in attracting developers - "Oh, *they* work here?" Indeed, folks who've been active in developer communities for many years will likely as not know a bunch of good people, plus often have more reach in those communities than most recruiters. That pond you're fishing in? They've been marinading in it. It's worth thinking about, I reckon.

LinkedIn Recruiter (without advanced filters) keys on: - Title 🔎 - Location 🌏 - Skills 🤸♂️🤺 (These are the skills you have added to your profile.) - Company 🏢 - Keywords 🔑 (Any words that make it onto your profile) This seems so straightforward, but it's not. A Software Engineer can code in any number of languages. A Civil Engineer may focus on land development, construction, water resources, transportation, etc. Some folks list their location as the United States. 🤔 Some folks don't update their profiles. Many folks like adding all possible skills to their profiles. 🤥 Some folks only list titles and don't explain the specifics of their roles. If you'd like to be found by recruiters who have relevant roles for your background, make sure you're updating these areas of your profile with meaningful skills, responsibilities, tools, and areas of focus. Also, let us know you're looking by turning on the "open to work" feature. If you don't want inmails, you can update your profile so that you don't receive them from folks you're not connected to.

Is credibility by association a thing? What do you think? I was recently reminded of a time in my career when I was working on a GIS integration project with a major Oil & Gas company to allow them to monitor assets such as oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Data was from many different sources and it was quite the feat at the time. This project ended up being featured in an article on a Microsoft site about the power of data and integrations or similar. The developers I was working with at this company had impressive backgrounds and education. A week into the project I discovered that this team did not have the knowledge to create basic HTTP headers or process XML. I had assumed this was common knowledge, and I was surprised. How could it be? We got through the project, and it wasn't the last time I had to provide code samples, tutorials, and extra effort to see a project through with many such examples. Now when I see people put "Ex Big Company" on their profiles and resumes I wonder. Isn't this a classic logical fallacy? When my responsibilities included interviewing and hiring, I tried to keep this in mind. Everyone is unique and two people, even with the same experience, are not necessarily equal. When I began taking into account passion and interest in the technology we began to attract employees that joined the company and thrived. Less job hopping and far better problem solving.
