To celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, we hosted a ‘PetSavers Progressive Care’ module at BSAVA Congress 2024 where some of our prestigious alumni, who are exponents of EBVM (Evidence Based Veterinary Medicine), discussed how to bring findings from high quality evidence into day-to-day clinical practice. The module examined how to use EBVM techniques in real life; how to decide when new information is relevant to veterinary practice; how to differentiate good science from mediocre or bad science; how to identify misuse of evidence; how to design your own study and avoid the common pitfalls encountered in veterinary research, including how to access support for study design and gaining ethical approval. If you were unable to attend, and would like to find out more, recordings of the sessions are available free of charge until the end of August in the BSAVA library. “Unpredictable and uncontrollable” is a difficult way to describe the reasons why vets are leaving. I believe it’s an incorrect way to look at things that doesn’t factor in the millions of reasons vets have to leave. Veterinary as a whole is in a difficult spot - there just isn’t enough time & vets to help all the animals that need care. There are different solutions for time, Mlemo included. What needs a more robust and systemic solution is the amount of vets currently in practice. Maybe if we recognised the issue is partly the culture, partly how we handle educating vets (only 1 university in Ireland has a suitable course! a lot of future vets have to go to the UK or other EU countries as there just isn’t enough places in that course for everyone that wants to attend it), and all the other factors; we could try coming up with some other solution that fixes things longer term. I’m open to conversation about this, feel free to comment or DM your thoughts.
Em•ploy•ee At•tri•tion: Employees leaving their organizations for unpredictable or uncontrollable reasons. 👁️Startling Facts: -30% of veterinary practice team members are currently contemplating leaving - 50% of them are considering stepping away from clinical practice altogether -90% will not return to clinical practice once they leave The repercussions resonate deeply within our community, underscoring the need for collective action. A supportive work environment involves a workplace where employees have good relationships with one another, good communication, and there is clear and fair leadership on board. A strong correlation exists between a supportive work environment and job satisfaction among veterinary profesionals that can lead to increased work commitment and effort shown by employees at work. This leads to increased productivity, better physical and mental wellbeing for the employee, and less staff turnover for the employer. High work-related stress and low job satisfaction among veterinary professionals can lead to many adverse outcomes for individuals and the practice, such as higher rate of decreased work performance, and increased frequency of errors and accidents at work. A supportive work environment can act as a buffer against stresses and strains in an individual's personal and professional life because the camaraderie and concern for one another that occurs in a supportive work environment can lead to emotional, instrumental, and informational support for employees during hard times. This can be seen as an investment for both the employer and the employee, leading more dedication to the practice and more effecient employees, showing how important this is in preventing staff turnover and keeping employees satisfied in their current position. Just a thought. What do you think?
