Today, I attended a session at the University of Fribourg, organized by Conférence Universitaire de Suisse Occidentale (CUSO) titled 'Thèse par articles' or thesis by publication. Here are my key takeaways from the session, followed by a poetic summary. 1. One of the most critical insights I gained was the importance of taking a reflective approach when choosing between the monographic thesis and the article-based thesis. Both formats come with their pros and cons, and it’s essential to evaluate which one aligns best with your personal objectives, your project’s goals, and your target audience. In addition, you must take into account your own personal characteristics and writing style. The best way to navigate this is by experimenting with both formats at different stages of the process and observing which one works best for you. 2. This session also clarified many doubts I had regarding institutional rules for pursuing a doctorate. It shed light on key aspects such as the responsibilities of being the first author of an article, how many articles are required, and the stages leading up to the defense. It was not only an eye-opener for writing a thèse par articles, but also an essential session for novice doctoral students to better understand the journey toward obtaining a doctorate. And here's a poem I wrote to summarise today's session: At the very first stages you have several ideas but can't see them concretely in pages. Today's session on thesis by publications or a monography helped me chart out a trajectory of how to proceed. Clarity will not come from the beginning No piece of work is perfect from the start so think well and play smart. No method, no format is the best It's a journey: navigate, feel lost to finally build your own nest Today a young researcher, tomorrow a potential collaborator (maybe even a professor) Understand the world in which you're living by interacting and researching But, don't forget to take time to reflect on your own development and learning. Thank you to our facilitators for this enriching session Maryvonne Charmillot Maitena Armagnague-Roucher Tania Ogay #doctoralconference #doctoralstudent #phd #cuso #learnsomethingneweveryday

UNO1️⃣ DOS2️⃣ TRES3️⃣ Each time I get a chance to be on the judging panel of the famous three-minute 🕒thesis competition, I never say no. In the competition, PhD 📖students are required to present 🗣️ their entire thesis using ONE slide, in less than THREE minutes - in a format that can easily be grasped by non-specialist audiences. 💯 It is always a pleasure working with colleagues from the Central University of Technology, and the University of the Free State 🙏🏾 #NamibiaUniversityOfScienceAndTechnology #ScienceCommunication #PostgraduateStudies #Research #PresentingSkills #ThreeMinuteThesisCompetition

🎓 Samuel's Success Story: From Struggling PhD Student to Conference Star 🌟 When I was a PhD student, I'd have killed for the results Samuel Zewdie is getting... ⭐ Organized a conference for 120 people ⭐ Got his abstract accepted at two international conferences ⭐ Nearly finished his first research paper 📍 I gave Samuel feedback on his introduction and literature review, and there was hardly anything to comment on anymore. He's well on track to submit that paper to a Q1 journal. 📍 To recap: Who: Samuel Zewdie, PhD student Problem: Telling a coherent story, submitting papers to conferences and journals Solution: Join Published Researcher program Result: Abstract for conferences accepted, research paper soon to be submitted How did Samuel achieve this? 🤔 ✅ Proven step-by-step process available 24/7 ✅ Weekly feedback on writing ✅ Personalized guidance at least once a week Want similar results? 😉 📅 Book a free 1-on-1 consultation with my team. This is exactly what Samuel did. Just like you, he was reading stories of other PhD students and researchers succeeding while struggling himself. 🧎 One day, he decided he'd had enough. He thought, "There must be a better way. If this process works for so many others, it should also work for me." And it did. Your skill in writing grants can bring in a ton of research funding. Consider this: That niche research area? → Funders may be eager to support it. Your methodological expertise? → Pure gold for interdisciplinary projects. Those hard-earned proposal lessons? → Priceless to early-career researchers. But here's a crucial point to ponder: Grant skills unused = $0 Grant skills applied = $100K+ in funding Stop blocking your potential! Start with these 5 simple steps: 1. List your top 2-3 research strengths 2. Identify funding bodies desperate for your expertise 3. Package it (clear objectives, solid methodology, realistic budget) 4. Frame it based on impact, not just academic interest 5. Pitch it without losing scientific integrity Bear in mind: You don't need to be a Nobel laureate. You just need to address a gap in current knowledge. Your "incremental progress" is a funder's "next big breakthrough." Seeking further guidance? We'll teach you exactly how you can craft a winning grant proposal next week: https://lnkd.in/eQVgvZjD #grantwriting #phd #research

The Board of the Research Council of Finland made decisions in June regarding the Academy Professor funding scheme. 📣 🔹 The number of funding periods will be limited to one. 🔹 The funding period will be extended to six years. The following was also agreed👇 ➡ Academy Professor funding will be granted through a single-stage call: applicants will submit full applications in the winter call. ➡ Applicants must choose whether they are applying for Academy Project Funding or an Academy Professorship, as only one application can be submitted in the same call round. ➡ Applications will be reviewed in two stages: first by the winter call experts, then by review panels (the strongest applications). ➡ The funding decisions will be made no later than December 2025, and the funding periods can start on 1 January or 1 August 2026. ➡ The funding period limit will enter into force from the call opening in autumn 2024. In support of our strategy, the Academy Professor funding scheme aims to ensure the capacity of research for renewal and reform, support scientific breakthroughs and solutions, and facilitate better and higher-impact skills and competence. Earlier in April, the Board outlined that the funding scheme will move to a single-decision model, with flexibility in the use of funding. 🎓 10 weeks until my PhD registration End of November, I'll present my PhD research proposal to Wellington School of Business and Government faculty. I will share a 10,000-word research proposal outlining what the literature says about housing policy and social cohesion in Aotearoa, the gaps, and how I'll answer my research questions given those gaps. I need to do this while also convincing the research committee that my research questions are worthy of time and that I have the competency and skills to answer them with academic rigour and integrity. It's a big deal; it's the first big milestone in my (and anybody's) PhD journey. And, I’m officially at the stage where the mountain of literature I have coded, reviewed, annotated and filed since January, which is so much, feels less like an organized treasure trove and more like a tangled mess of -How did I code this much, and what did I do with it all?! Housing policy and social cohesion are far more complex when you've coded 300+ articles. Who knew?! [besides, Lyn Lavery] Anyway, Challenge accepted! 🚀 The sprint begins. I'll come up for air after the 9 of December; until then, I'll be buried in my literature. Wish me luck!
