For the 7th year, the Graduate School in Partnership with the Office of Research awarded Graduate Summer Awards to support students' scholarship. Today we introduce Ida Oesteraas. Advisor: Dr. Vanessa R. Panfil Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I am a runner, so I run a lot during the week, probably around 50 miles on average. I go to First Landing State Park because it’s the best for the mind and the body. I also enjoy making art in all shapes and forms and hanging out with my cat, Jaxon. Q: What are the most significant challenges that you face in your graduate journey? A: At this point, I am almost done with this chapter of my life, but in hindsight, my biggest challenge was conceptualizing and narrowing down my dissertation project. It took many tries and do-overs before I landed on a project that was feasible and relevant to my interests and future. Q: What advice would you give to aspiring graduate students? A: I would clarify to yourself why you are pursuing your graduate degree. Know that the process will be challenging, but you can do it. Rely on discipline mostly, and always put your best foot forward. Enjoy this time in your life because it is extra special as you are surrounded by curious minds and people working to become the next best version of themselves.

STEP will be conducting a session on “Navigating Careers and Higher Studies After Graduation” for the students of Patkai Christian College on 30th April 2024. The last few months before graduation are often the most confusing stage for the majority of students. Some might have no clue whether to continue higher studies or start working, and many students end up making wrong decisions either out of panic or peer pressure rather than their own understanding. This session will address these fears and issues and shed light on the various possibilities that students can pursue after graduation. The focus will be on the various fellowships available post-graduation and how to apply for them. Additionally, it will cover the preparation needed to apply for scholarships abroad and how to convert one’s passion into a career in the 21st century.
