The French Ministry of Industry and Energy has announced the award of tenders for two 250MW floating offshore wind farms in the Mediterranean Sea. The award of the two projects in the Gulf of Lion with one project located in the 'Narbonne' area and the second project located in the 'Gulf of Fos' area. Together with the commissioning of the Fécamp and Saint-Brieuc wind farms, the award is considered a further step towards achieving France's objectives of 18GW of offshore wind in service by 2035 and 45GW by 2050. 💧 French waters earn a European record. On 15 May, France’s Minister Delegate for Energy, Roland Lescure, announced the results of the world’s first-ever commercial-scale floating wind auction. The operation put up a single 250 MW quota for construction off the coast of southern Brittany. And as the WindEurope industry association points out today, it is a milestone for this technology segment. At least at European level.  Currently the old continent houses only small pilot plants and demonstration projects equipped with floating wind turbines. In other words, the European offshore fleet remains firmly anchored to wind generators with fixed foundations, despite ambitious national planning. “The floating wind is here to stay“, commented Pierre Tardieu, Chief Policy Officer of WindEurope. “The demonstration projects worked. Now it’s time to move on to the large ones. Out of that, 11% comes from Poland. The country’s first offshore wind project, Baltic Power (1.2 GW), is expected to be operational in 2026.
