At The Nature Conservancy, we know that conservation thrives through collaboration. When faced with the challenge of encroaching trees threatening sagebrush habitat and the wildlife that depends on it, like elk, pronghorn and sage-grouse, we join forces with landowners, public land agencies and others who care about the extraordinary habitat of the Sagebrush Sea. As part of the Southwest Montana Sagebrush Partnership, we strategically thin trees along forest edges and conduct controlled burns to reintroduce fire to the landscape. Whilst the Australian continental shelf doesn't have the same specific geological complexities left by glaciation as the North Sea, this work illustrates the value and importance of detailed understanding of the offshore Quaternary geology. This information is a fundamental part of ground modelling used by engineers prior to installing infrastructure for offshore wind projects, but also to understand the surviving landscape geomorphology, associated tangible and intangible First Nations cultural values, and the potential for paleoenvironmental and archaeological remains. Another fantastic output from the marine geoscientists at BGS, from a single map we can understand the positions of past ice margins (to predict geotechnical properties), reconstruct former river drainage patterns (to predict archaeological potential) and track sediment mobility (to predict burial/scour potential of seabed infrastructure). If you work in the offshore renewables sector, so much can be gained from this free resource ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is excellent news showcasing what's possible with regional collaboration and partnership working. Especially pleasing to have the Oxford to Cambridge Pan-Regional Partnership play a role in making this happen. Another example (there are many) of how landscape-scale nature recovery, working in tandem with farming and the rural economy, rightly sits alongside the region's famed industrial strengths.
