Improv is magic!

The most magical thing happened tonight and I don’t have a video of it, but I’ll never forget it as long as I live. I’m writing this now so I don’t forget the moment before I’m asleep. My level 1 improv comedy class from the fall semester got back together tonight for a holiday potluck. We ate, we laughed, and then before saying goodbye, one of my students broke out her ukulele and announced she wrote a song. For me. It was called “Because of Her” and as she performed it, the lyrics melted my heart into a million pieces. I don’t want to embarrass her so will just leave it at that but it was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me. Teaching improv comedy this year with Washington Improv Theater has been the most unexpected gift. Three semesters of L1 students (all pictured), all uniquely talented and each class like a fingerprint. A snowflake. A moment in time. 1 of 1. Never before. Never again. Teaching improv is barely a blip on my profile. It’s got nothing to do with anything other than it’s got everything to do with what matters: people. I am humming that beautiful song to myself and smiling… because of them.
