Nigeria, especially the Northeast region, faces significant vulnerability to climate change, marked by rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, desertification, and diminishing resources. These challenges worsen food insecurity and fuel conflicts over limited natural resources. In 2024, we prioritized building climate resilience by actively implementing key adaptation practices in Northeast Nigeria. One major effort was our Agroforestry Project, in which we planted 30,000 trees in Gombe State to protect livelihoods and reduce disaster risks. This initiative was in collaboration with Mercy Corps under the Rural Resilience Activity (RRA), funded by USAID. Working alongside Gombe Goes Green (3G), we engaged 3,000 smallholder farmers who will be reaping the benefits of this initiative for several years. Under this project, EERC successfully planted 30,000 trees across 30 hectares in four communities: Lasale, Mallam Inna, Baganje, and Lapandintai, across two Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Gombe State. El Niño's Impact on Zimbabwe's Rural Communities - A Call to Private Sector Action #ClimateAdaptation #Zimbabwe Zimbabwe's rural communities, already facing a harsh climate, are bearing the brunt of El Niño's impact and national statistics paint a grim picture of the situation. "The latest Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) report estimates over 2.6 million people, including 1.7 million children,are food insecure due to the El Niño-induced drought.” The state of emergency declaration further highlights the urgency. The private sector has a critical role to play in building resilience. Here are some areas for action: Climate-smart agriculture: Invest in drought-resistant seeds, irrigation infrastructure, and training programs for farmers. Financial inclusion: Provide microloans and insurance products to help rural communities weather climate shocks. Early warning systems: Partner with NGOs and government to develop and disseminate localized weather information. Sustainable infrastructure: Invest in renewable energy and water conservation projects to improve long-term sustainability. By working together, the private sector, government, and communities can build a more resilient future for rural Zimbabwe. The challenge of clean water access touches all aspects of life, underscoring the intersection of housing and basic services to meet essential human needs and achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Habitat for Humanity International is actively working to give informal and slum dwellers a platform to voice their needs and secure investments to meet SDG 6. A pressing issue we’re addressing is the exclusion of shared sanitation from the “basic access” category within the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) sanitation ladder. To address this urgent issue, we must leverage early warning systems and innovative water management practices to build resilience in our water and sanitation services across the continent.
