Water may have gained greater visibility at COP29, but the shameful outcome of a new global climate finance goal left many delegates with heavy hearts 💔 The deal will also, crucially, leave many communities to face the impacts of a climate crisis they didn't cause without the financial and practical support they need. Read analysis on all the major outcomes from the Baku climate summit – from the New Collective Quantified Goal to the Global Goal on Adaptation, to Loss and Damage and NDCs and NAPs – from Moreblessings Chidaushe, Julie Henri, Tove Lexén, Lesley Pories, Adnan Q., Hantaniaina Rabesandratana and Helen Rumford ➡️ https://brnw.ch/21wP3ZZ #COP29 #ClimateFinance #ClimateAction

As the Under2 Coalition General Assembly at #COP29Azerbaijan approaches, we’re eager to foster collaborative conversations and drive action among leaders. We’ll be there to showcase how subnational governments have a vital role to play in tackling climate change, as they have the scale and the means to shift the needle on climate. We need the highest level of ambition for our climate at this crucial time. We can prevent the worst impacts of climate change. But we have to act now. Our main priority areas include: ⭕️Pushing for stronger NDCs, developed with subnational governments, in time for the next deadline of February 2025. ⭕️Calling for effective and accessible climate finance, including through the new global goal (New Collective Quantified Goal) set to be agreed at COP29. ⭕️Demonstrating increased ambition on energy, transport, industry, food and methane emissions reduction. 🌍 The fate of millions in small island states hangs in the balance at COP29, where global leaders have a critical opportunity to take bold action on climate finance and loss and damage. As the dust settles on #COP29, it’s clear this year’s climate summit was fraught with contention. The process, which aspires to be inclusive, transparent, and party-led, has faced significant criticism over the last two weeks. Despite these ideals, the reality is stark: COP29 and the global north have failed the developing countries that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rather than delivering on promises of bold ambition, the outcomes signal a disappointing scenario—one that offers little assurance that developing nations will receive the support they need to adapt and address the escalating impacts of climate change. 🖋️ Sally Tyldesley Laura Bahlman https://bit.ly/4i7jNtF

As #COP29 kicks off, it’s time to address the imbalance in #ClimateFinance. Low-income countries, bearing the brunt of climate impacts, currently receive less than 3% of global climate funding. And while early warning systems save lives and reduce disaster losses, only half of the world has adequate coverage—leaving the most vulnerable communities unprotected. For these high-risk regions, access to Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems can be a lifeline, offering a vital layer of resilience against crises. While these systems have proven to reduce disaster-related deaths and losses, only half of countries worldwide report having adequate early warning coverage—and the gaps are widest where vulnerability is highest. At COP29, we’re calling for a bold commitment to strengthen #AnticipatoryAction and significantly scale up climate financing in low-income countries. By ensuring that everyone has access to robust #EarlyWarningSystems and anticipatory measures by 2027, in line with the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative, we can protect lives, safeguard livelihoods, and move closer to true climate justice. #IASC #ClimateAction ⤵️

COP29, short for Conference of Parties, is the UNFCCC annual international climate change meeting where national leaders and ministers of the 197 parties and representatives of all sectors of society – NGOs, scientists, students, businesses, journalists, and experts come together to address the climate crisis and negotiate a response to it. The parties consist of countries and European Union members who have ratified the UNFCCC treaty that aims to stabilise and reduce GHG concentrations and emissions to prevent the dangerous impacts of climate change. #adaptationstrategy #ClimateAdaptation #climatefinance https://lnkd.in/gHs7ip-k
