Who Grows vs. Who Profits: A Bittersweet Reality of the Global Chocolate Industry 🍫 The infographic on global chocolate exporters tells a story of profitability, but there’s an equally important story behind the scenes—one of cacao growers. 🌍 Countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Indonesia grow the majority of the world's cacao, yet the profits from chocolate exports are dominated by a completely different set of nations. This imbalance highlights a key issue in global supply chains: the value gap between producers and exporters. 🔍 Let’s superimpose the data: Top Cacao Growers: [Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia...] Top Chocolate Exporters: [Switzerland, Belgium, Germany...] The question is: Are we addressing the inequalities in the global chocolate industry? 👉 Let’s put the facts together: 1️⃣ Cacao farmers often earn less than 6% of the final price of a chocolate bar. 2️⃣ Child labor and unsustainable farming practices persist due to poverty and lack of fair trade practices. 3️⃣ While exporting nations profit, the growers face economic and environmental challenges. 🌟 It’s time for us to rethink how we value and support the backbone of this industry—the farmers who make chocolate possible. Fair trade, sustainable practices, and equitable value distribution should be non-negotiable. What are your thoughts on this? Let’s spark a conversation about equity and fairness in global trade. 🌍💡 #Sustainability #FairTrade #ChocolateIndustry #CacaoFarmers

<<CR Beverage IPO Could Fuel China's Bottled Water Price War>> The potential IPO of China Resources Beverage, CR Holdings' bottled water unit, could bring the ongoing price war among China's bottled water makers such as Nongfu Spring and Wahaha to a boiling point. The company could double its self-owned production capacity by 2025, with further capacity expansion to be funded by the IPO proceeds. Rising supply is likely to fuel further price cuts as firms battle for market share. Extractivism never got any realer than this. Ghana and Ivory Coast who produce about 75% of the world's cocoa are trapped in the "Rest of the World". When one talks of trade justice and ending primary commodity dependence in Africa [and the Global South] this is what they mean....ending uneven terms of engagement to ensure that Africa is nolonger trapped at the lower end of the value chain.

Excited for this full-circle moment. I first learnt about Sucafina a few years ago in Kenya during a field work and have since had the pleasure of working with the company across 4 countries during my undergraduate research project, and very excited to see its growing presence in China especially so close to home in Kunshan, just a few minutes from DKU. The surge in FDIs from the global coffee industry into Kunshan follows the local government's recent commitment to solidifying the district as the 'coffee capital' of China. This has been largely via a public-private enhanced business environment, which has led to more than 60% of China's coffee being roasted in Kunshan, which is impressive given the district's small size, and the fact that more than 90% of all coffee in China is grown in Yunnan, a province more than 2000 km away. In addition, Starbucks investment of a $220+ million coffee innovation park in October last year, the company's largest foreign investment outside of North America, further highlights the district's strategic positioning to leading the drive in meeting China's growing demand in coffee. I see the local government's support of the private sector as bearing a lot of potential. These companies bring a wealth of experience in technology and policy from operations in other countries, and hopefully coffee demand in China can be met sustainably with reduced water and environmental pollution that's typical of coffee cherry processing. More on this here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eZ62quQc
Some exciting news! Sucafina recently signed a cooperation agreement with Kunshan official authorities to be the first multinational coffee trading company to operate a bonded warehouse. The state-of-the-art warehouse has a 10,000+ metric ton capacity, multiple receiving bays, and temperature and humidity controls for optimal coffee storage. Thanks to this agreement, clients across Asia will benefit from: ⚡ faster delivery times throughout the APAC region ⭐ improved quality control in a dedicated facility operated to Sucafina's standards 🙌 increased flexibility with mixed container receipt and dispatch capabilities 📍 enhanced service for local customers #sucafina #apacwarehouse #greencoffee #coffee #coffeenews
