Reflecting on insights shared during my speech at last year's International Corrections and Prisons Association conference in Belgium, I commend American Psychological Association's recent call to prohibit punitive isolation in juvenile justice settings. While short periods of isolation used as an absolute last resort may be necessary to stabilize behavior and ensure facility safety, isolation should never be used as a tool to punish individuals. APA’s position is a crucial step echoing the need for humane, rehabilitative approaches. Let's leverage this momentum to advocate for policies that prioritize youth well-being and rehabilitation. Together, we can foster a system that empowers rather than punishes. https://lnkd.in/ezr3ixUb #JuvenileJustice #EndIsolation #YouthRehabilitation"

Our Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, in Children & Young People Now: "Custody is profoundly harmful for children. The fact that more children than ever feel unsafe in custody is a clear reflection of a broken system in which instability and fear have become the norm." https://lnkd.in/es5Xiq_z #youthcustody #childrenincustody #childreninprison #prison #custody #youthjustice #justice #justicesystem

NEBRASKA JUSTICE SUMMIT OBJECTIVES: Information! Action! Solutions! The Nebraska Summit on Justice & Disparities serves as a vehicle to connect stakeholders with resources to work together for significant reduction in the startling rates of minority contact in the criminal justice system in Nebraska. 2021 data from the Sentencing Project shows that Nebraska incarcerates Black Citizens at a rate of 9 times that of the White incarceration rate, placing Nebraska among the top 10 states in the country for this disproportionality. Other minority groups including the Native and Latinx communities are also critically overrepresented and the juvenile justice system is also displays alarming disparities. https://lnkd.in/gqHmt-5V #justice #disparities

The Importance of Vision in Juvenile Justice Reform In the realm of juvenile justice reform, vision is our guiding light. It empowers us to imagine a future where every young person is given the opportunity to thrive, irrespective of their past mistakes. A clear vision directs our efforts, fosters innovative solutions, and ensures that our policies and practices are not just reactive but transformative. At Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility, our vision is to create a nurturing environment that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment. By embracing this forward-thinking approach, we aim to break the cycle of recidivism and help our youth build brighter futures. Vision in juvenile justice reform isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey. It's about creating pathways for growth, fostering resilience, and instilling hope. Together, with a shared vision, we can pave the way for a more just and equitable system that truly supports the rehabilitation and development of our youth. #JuvenileJusticeReform #Vision #Transformation #Rehabilitation #FutureLeaders

📢 COPE invites you to its upcoming webinar 👩💻 where we will explore how education and justice sectors can work together to meet the needs of children with a parent in prison, strengthen family ties and provide consistent support. When prisons and schools work collaboratively 🤝, prison walls become more permeable to family life: parents in prison can engage more actively in their children’s education through the help of schools, who in turn gain better insight into the challenges children face and how they can help. The expertise of a young person impacted by a parent's imprisonment will feature in the webinar, co-facilitated by two professionals in the field who will draw on international best practice of prison-school collaboration. Practical steps and replicable models of action will be offered, as well as takeaway resources, including tools for collaboration and template materials that can be implemented in your local context. 💡 This event is open to everyone interested, particularly policy makers and practitioners in education and criminal justice. How can community service sentences positively impact both offenders and the community they serve? Community service sentences have a positive impact on both offenders and the community. Offenders avoid prison, gaining a chance to reintegrate into society, learn new skills, and take responsibility for their actions. For communities, it means benefiting from services like cleaning, repairs, or helping others, improving local well-being. It also helps to de-congest the prisons and costs for the government by assigning offenders to productive work. Additional benefits include rehabilitation, restorative justice, reduced re-offending, and community strengthening through shared contributions. This win-win approach promotes both social good and financial efficiency. #CommunityServiceMatters #JusticeForAll #RehabilitationWorks #RestorativeJustice #SecondChances #ReduceRecidivism #PrisonReform #CAPIOImpact #GivingBack #JusticeReimagined #capionigeria

This is #RestorativeJusticeWeek, which is recognized every year during the third week of November to acknowledge the impacts and achievements of the restorative justice approach and its application in Canada. Check out Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime for a great resource on restorative justice. There are currently 93 restorative justice programs in British Columbia, 74 in Québec, and 65 in Ontario. Restorative justice programs need to be further studied and quantified, but limited research in Canada has shown that they are a more effective method of improving victim-offender satisfaction, increasing offender compliance with restitution, and decreasing the recidivism of offenders when compared to more traditional criminal justice responses. 💬 What do you think our approach should be? 💬 #RestorativeJustice #RetributiveJustice #Justice
