Further to this, the role of technology was highlighted, how technology will assist in increasing the participation of women in the industry, and how, as a collective, we focus on gender equity.  Some key insights were around the need to raise more awareness of careers in the mining industry, the importance of partnerships and collaboration at all levels, and the need for women to be intentional about their futures and how best to take charge of that.  The importance of corporate cultures was highlighted as one of the value drivers that the industry should consider as we better understand the holistic human elements that can create a more sustainable mine of the future that is more inclusive of women and female leaders. 📹 Click the link here: https://bit.ly/4eOaPjh to watch the full video now and gain a deeper understanding of the discussion. Today we share a picture from Carolina Ferreira Herrera who is a Consultant in Critical Minerals for the Inter-American Development Bank from the US. In her words - "This photo was taken in the Salar de Atacama during my tenure as a team leader of a Responsible Lithium Supply Chain project, which has been one of my most enriching experiences and a unique opportunity for growth. It allowed me to explore the territory, understand the production processes in situ, engage in meaningful dialogue, listen to others by looking them in the eyes, and recognize the collective commitment to caring for the territory. As a woman from Chile, a country with an important presence in the mining industry and with an increasing female participation, I am confident that women can make substantial contributions. To do so, we must not only assume diverse roles, but also dare to be leaders and demonstrate our capabilities in all areas. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without the participation of women. “One major way to usher in change and diversity is to make companies more resilient, more approachable, more welcoming, and more sustainable – just like the woman who could lead them,” said Maria Combrink, Deputy Chairperson, Women In Mining South Africa (WiMSA), during her opening remarks at the 15th Annual Women in Mining Conference & Career Expo, hosted by Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC). The event features women from around world who have made visible contributions above and beyond their daily responsibilities in the mining industry. Over the next three days topics to be unpacked include whether desired targets are being reached in achieving inclusivity; investing in meaningful and progressive change for women within mining; looking at transformation as not only a regulatory requirement but a business imperative to minimise accidents and dangerous incidents in line with investing in the Health & Safety of WiM; leadership in a rapidly changing world, looking at inclusion as one of the greatest assets in ensuring long-term sustainability; and the role of digital innovation in the mining industry. #womeninmining #genderequality #transformation #healthandsafety #womenempowerment #womeninleadership

I have learnt a lot! ⚒ On Monday and Tuesday, I had the opportunity to attend the 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐊@90 conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, to mark the 90th anniversary of #MINTEK (Council for Mineral Technology). At the end of my three years here in SA, gaining such a detailed insight into the South African mining sector was a great professional, but also personal enrichment. A few highlights and results of the conference can be found in the figure 👇. You may wonder - but why so many #women in that sketch? Because I would like to highlight that there are many great women working in the South African mining industry, that they are present (in the mine as #workers, #geologists and #engineers, but also at conferences like this one as #scientists and #managers). A lot has happened in the last few years. The Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said: "South Africa has moved forward". Since the beginning of the 2000s, South Africa has a much better reputation with women in the industry. This is a great step ahead and gives me hope that I will see more female colleagues in #Europe in the future. Okay – but why the #pink colour scheme? Because during the conference, the question arose as to whether pink helmets and boots would make the mining industry more attractive to women. 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 👩🏭 The mining industry in Australia is seeing a positive shift with more women joining the workforce than ever before. This change is paving the way for diversity and inclusion, which are critical for innovation and growth. During my experience at Central Systems, I had the pleasure of working with some amazing women. A shout-out to you all today! Their dedication and expertise were truly inspiring. Empowering Insights from the Women In Mining South Africa Symposium! I recently had the privilege of attending the WiMSA Symposium, where I joined a thought-provoking panel discussion on "Strategies for Women's Career Growth in Mining". The speakers shared their personal journeys, challenges, and advice for success in the industry. This panel discussion was moderated by Raksha Naidoo and the panellists included Vanessa N. , Mpai Mosiuoa and Mogaleadi Seabela . Hear from the trailblazers themselves: - They entered the industry for varied reasons - from needing a job to breaking gender stereotypes! - They emphasized the importance of intentional career planning and being brave enough to take chances. - They faced challenges like unconscious bias, perceptions, and self-doubt, but overcame them with determination and hard work. - They stressed the value of mentors, sponsors, and coaches in navigating the industry. - They highlighted the essential qualities for success: competence, resilience, adaptability, persistence, and discipline. Takeaways: - Don't be afraid to take chances and believe in yourself. - Embrace your strengths and natural instincts. - Surround yourself with supportive mentors and peers. - Stay adaptable, persistent, and disciplined in pursuit of your goals. - Continuously work on self-improvement - it's an ongoing journey!
