Highlights from the IGFMining AGM.
Last week, I attended the IGF Mining Annual General Meeting in Geneva, where representatives from IGF Mining’s 85 member states gathered to discuss "Balancing the need for minerals with protecting people and the planet."
The event featured insights from government officials, subject matter experts, and global institutions.
Things that resonated included:
- Innovative Solutions: Embracing technical advancements in water, energy, recycling, and biodiversity is crucial to making mining more efficient and less resource-intensive.
- Reframing Waste: Viewing waste as a valuable resource can shift investor behaviour and unlock new opportunities.
- Circularity: how much there is still to learn about circularity and how mining can use it towards sustainability as well as cost reduction
- Empowering ASM: Formalising artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) through technical assistance, safer practices, and regulation is vital to improving production, reducing harm, and addressing social issues like gender-based violence and child labour.
- Rethinking Value Chains: Moving beyond "ground to port" in the Global South is essential, focusing on value addition, local supply chains, and economic diversification in mining-producing nations.
- Local Procurement Potential: Mining companies’ largest in-country expenditure is often local procurement—an area ripe for maximising benefits to host communities.
- Gender Integration: Gender-responsive frameworks are critical as demand for critical minerals grows. Evidence-based research, impact assessments, and gender-sensitive policies must guide both private and public sectors to ensure inclusivity and minimise harm.
- Legislative Progress: Countries like Nigeria and Colombia are advancing gender-sensitive and inclusive legal frameworks, offering promising examples for the sector.
We left inspired by the global commitment to fostering innovation, equity, and sustainability in mining.
