It's Okay to Ask for Help! Asking for help is a crucial skill that provides the hashtag #support and guidance we need to overcome challenges, improve relationships, and promote overall wellbeing. It's a sign of hashtag #strength, not weakness. In 2022, in collaboration with Bundaberg Family Relationships Centre, River Nations, Family and Baby Network and Wide Bay Kids created a great local resource; The Seekers Tree. The booklet was first published as a guide to help families living in the #Bundaberg region #connect with services that could help them raise a family. Encouraging #helpseeking behaviour in parents and caregivers can have a significant impact on the health and #wellbeing of children. Parents and caregivers who are willing to ask for help and support when they need it are better equipped to provide a safe, nurturing, and stable home environment for children. This can lead to improved mental health, academic success, and overall wellbeing for children. In 2023, phase one of The Seekers Tree website was established. Resources like The Seekers Tree, created through #collaborative #partnerships, offers valuable support to the #community. Remember, no one has to do it alone. Visit www.theseekerstree.com. We are super excited to have received funding from Social Shift through Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre to update the website and update and print the booklet. "If it takes a village to raise a child, what does it take to raise a village?" 💬 This is the question which struck me when I was listening to Cormac Russell in his Plenary Presentation Healthy Quality BC. We all know that "it takes a village to raise a child". And being a mum to young children myself, I quite like to joke with other mums, "But where is that village?" 😂 Is it a joke or not? I grew up in a city, where there are vague boundaries, so the community feeling almost doesn't exist. 🏙️ Neighbours don't know each other. Children belong to their families (ideally) and to official institutions (school, clubs) but not so much to organic wider communities. I had a happy childhood nonetheless, but that feeling of community support, care and belonging was lacking. In the last 10 years, I had the privilege of living in 3 different smaller communities. 🏘️ It took me a while to warm up and now I can't overestimate the benefits of belonging to a community. 📈 Coping with social isolation and anxiety, compassion, self-actualisation, strong personal connections - these aspects of mental health benefit so much from that sense of belonging. It might be a village or not. But raising a healthy minded community would be beneficial for young and old, for the healthy and the sick, for the successful as well as those who are struggling. And when a community becomes a reference group for a child, young person or an adult, it will improve the mental health of individuals as well as society. ⁉️ What does it take to raise 'a village' in your opinion? ⬇️ #ittakesavillage #healthycommunity #compassion #empathy #community #connections #rooting #support #mentalhealth #wellbeing #society

We believe we need a renewed focus on prevention and early intervention. One way to do this is by building communities full of support networks and ways to improve daily wellbeing, including through access to things like exercise. Our #ThinkingDifferently manifesto is calling on political parties, policy makers and funders to: 🌳 Increase funding for community assets like parks, sports centres and libraries. 👩⚕️ Grow the children and young people’s mental health workforce and increase the training and support available to workers. 👩👩👦 Increase support for community-based early intervention services like family hubs. 🌈 Fund community-led early interventions for - and delivered with - marginalised groups. 📈 Build resources to study and act on local data about the root causes of mental ill health distinct to each community. We know that loneliness is detrimental to health, wellbeing and development but now, in a new study by Harvard University, researchers found that adults aged 50 and above who experienced chronic loneliness had a 56% higher risk of stroke than those who consistently reported not being lonely. Our Community Outreach service was set up to combat loneliness and isolation: our volunteers support people in their own homes and communities, until they are confident enough to access community groups and activities independently. Regular volunteer contact can increase a person’s positive social contacts, reducing social isolation and contributing to better mental health. Our staff and volunteers will also be able to identify any other needs the individual may have and can signpost to internal services, such as Money Advice, or external agencies, such as befriending services. Read more about the service and how to refer yourself or someone else: https://lnkd.in/etppxYFF Or, if you'd like to find out more about volunteering for our community outreach team, contact us: 01473 622888 / volunteer@angliacaretrust.org.uk . . #communityoutreach #combatingloneliness #isolation #healthandwellbeing #volunteeringsuffolk #volunteeringnorfolk #freetraining #meetnewpeople #learnnewskills #volunteeropportunities #volunteersupport #makingadifference #winwithvolunteering

Children are still not getting the full benefits of being outside according to a child psychologist. Dr Amanda Gummer, a research psychologist specialising in child development encourages parents and carers to keep children engaged in activities out of the house, as they can foster their mental wellbeing. Dr Gummer said: "During the pandemic, kids lost out on a lot of socialisation, and it hasn't fully come back yet." For services in the community to be beneficial, they need to have buy-in from community members and reflect their voices. Culturally responsive supports that understand participants’ values and norms, especially when designed by or with community members themselves, are more likely to gain acceptance than services that are not responsive. Research studies have shown that, compared to culturally unresponsive services, responsive supports lead to improved outcomes, including higher participant satisfaction, increased retention or completion of services, better mental health, and other positive impacts. When public agencies fund services, those dollars should be directed towards programs that are most likely to be accepted and sustained. Grounding services in the community, including by co-designing them with young people and families, helps achieve these goals and ensure that public resources support services that will actually benefit families and communities. Did you know that in Ireland, 1 in 3 children experience mental health difficulties before they reach the age of 13 while 3 in 4 principals feel insufficiently trained to help deal with mental health challenges in their schools? That’s quite a striking statistic, isn’t it? At Sherpa Kids Ireland, it has always been important to us to take care of our children’s mental health and emotional well-being, recognise when children need mental health support and teach children to communicate their thoughts and feelings by providing them a safe and non-judgemental space to do so. That’s why we have teamed up with ‘A Lust For Life’ which is Ireland’s multi-award winning mental health charity that supports and encourages children to take care of their minds while also leading as a shining example by exposing the fact that mental health truly matters. A Lust For Life aims to reach every child in every primary school in Ireland and we are in full support of this. This would mean principals, teachers and special needs assistants would be trained to recognise and deal with mental health challenges in their school environment. It would also mean every child in Ireland will have access to mental health support, which we know will stand to them for life. A Lust For Life offers a free, emotional well-being and resilience programme for children which provides children a set of mental health tools to equip them for challenges relatable to young people. Tools such as emotional awareness, resilience and literacy are some of the few in which A Lust For Life offer. We believe that no child should get left behind. We believe that children deserve a better world and to be better equipped for the challenges that today’s world presents them. We understand the pressure that children are under within a fast-paced society and we are inspired to encourage children to take a breath, to listen to their feelings and to trust that we have got their back along the way. Mental health matters, it always has and it always will. https://lnkd.in/eQESWQJB #sherpakidsireland #alustforlife #nochildleftbehind #mentalhealthawarenessweek
